Good to hear my girls aren't the only ones snarfing down both grit and oyster shells. At least 3 of 9 started laying this week at 19 weeks old and I've had to refill both grit and oyster shell daily. Glad they are eating the oyster shell, though, as we were going to keep them on starter/grower feed.
We have an 18 week old Buff Orpington pullet that is having an eye issue. I noticed it on Sunday, it's now Tuesday. Her left eye seemed red, at first I thought maybe some dust got in it but she is still having issues today. I doesn't seem as red now, but she's rubbing the eye on her feathers...
My husband and I processed two Buff Orpington cockerels (15.5 weeks old) on Sunday and had fried chicken tonight! The birds dressed out to just over 3 lbs. each. We have 2-3 more that we will wait a few weeks to dispatch to let them get a bit bigger.
This is what I plan to do, our chickens are 16 weeks old and aren't laying yet, but we plan to keep a rooster so I don't want to switch to layer for his health. I'm just worried they won't eat the oyster shell for some reason, though we haven't even put it out yet! Glad to hear the...
Just call them what they are. My 17 year old knew from a young age the chickens in the yard and the chicken on the plate are the same thing. He's very loving with animals so that knowledge didn't harm him in any way.
If you have them, then yes, gnats, black flies, midges, no-see-ums, whatever they are called in your area can be a problem if they are bad in your area. Where I live we have buffalo gnats for a few weeks in late May/early June, which are active in the daytime, and my local chicken group is...
Thanks, I do think they ate way too much of it in a short period of time. We took it away and will give them some again next weekend. Hopefully when they get in the run they won't be as bored and they can have it free choice then.
Our chicks will be 7 weeks old in two days, we've been mixing in chick grit with the food, but they need to move to the #3 grit (I have the Cherrystone grit) so I put some of that out free choice today. They went to town on it and I'm afraid they are eating too much of it. Should I take it away...
Interesting! I got a chick stick and they were scared if it! They love earthworms though. Make sure to give them some chick grit if they are getting anything other than starter crumbles.
Thanks, we are definitely going to make the top of the run very sturdy so it should be able to hold the weight of a large bird and keep them out (hopefully).
I'll discuss with my husband elimiating the groundhog. He says he was going to start setting out traps soon, anyway. We do have all the...
We are building a coop and run for our 4 week old chicks. We have an abandoned shed on our property which is fairly close the where the run will be. A groundhog lives under the shed and he usually keeps to himself, but he has gotten up on our deck a couple times and he occasionally runs around...
