Hi All,
Well I went over this afternoon and Mum was off the nest again and baby was lying on it's back amongst the eggs. I thought it was dead, so I went to remove it but then noticed it was breathing ever so slightly. I brought it back to the house and nursed it, warmed it up, gave it some...
Thank you everyone - this forum is so friendly and helpful, I appreciate the time people take to answer my questions. I guess we give her a little more time and if the baby gets to be fluffy and still not opened the eyes, we will try the soft damp cloth.
we could hear it yesterday - is it possible for it to still be wet and tired 24 hours later? Is there such thing as a premmie chick? Or am I just clutching at straws?
Hello all,
This is my second attempt at hatching baby chicks - well, my hen does most of the work! lol We had a disaster before Christmas where there was only one hatched chick and then the other hens killed it a few days later. Since then our little broody hen has been very determined to...
Hi All,
Thank you for all your well wishes.
Day 23 - we were out for the whole day at a family function. When we returned home our hen had either abandoned her nest or had been forced out (she is our lowest "ranking" chicken in the flock). All of the remaining eggs were stone cold...

Chick pics!! We want chick pics!
I am not the tease - it is my little red hen "Romy", she won't let me see, but as soon as I can get a look at them, the camera will be at the ready! My partner should be home by about 7 tonight, so maybe then between us we can get a...
Afternoon of day 22: We have cheeping sounds!!!!!!! She is not letting me see anything yet, but I can definately HEAR them!
Now I will try to at least work out how to add a pick of my very protective Mum and proud Dad!
Hopefully that will work - computers are not my first language!
Day 22 this morning - no sign or sound of babies yet, but my little red hen is still looking very determined. I think I would need rigger's gloves to try to move her, she would try to tear me apart! This is her third "attempt" to hatch eggs, but as I said before, we have not had a rooster...
Hi All,
We have finally managed to have a broody hen AND fertile eggs at the same time! Has only taken almost 5 years!
Well, it is day 21 by my count and I am like a cat on a hot tin roof. I keep going over and checking on her, asking her if she has any babies yet, but so far nothing...
We have lost one to a wedgetail eagle but we have lost quite a number to foxes - including a beautiful Plymouth Rock Rooster "Conrad" - it was a very sad day when we came home to discover his trail of feathers!
