After sleeping on it, I have decided that the hens are innocent of this crime! I suspect the raccoon, but am not sure how it did it. The hens were not hiding - just screeching. We will be more vigilante than before, now that we know there are raccoons. We can never forget to secure the coop...
While digging the hole for her grave, my husband saw a family of raccoons in the back of the neighbor's yard. I've never seen them in our yard, and wonder if they would enter the chicken run in broad daylight. The door to the run isn't very big. If it happened out in the yard, or she just...
If anyone has had a chicken murdered by other chickens, I'm curious to know what their behavior was after killing it. One of my chicks was killed, and I'm not 100% sure it was the hens that did it, although I know they can be mean. I didn't see it happen.
I let my chickens out to roam the...
When one of my hens sat on her eggs for five weeks and they didn't hatch, we figured the rooster hadn't succeeded. She was so patient - sitting there day after day. We felt sorry for her, so bought two tiny chicks from the feed store, and stuffed them under her in the middle of the night. I...
My rooster "Baby" (because he was the baby of the group when we got them. He's a mutt: Barred Rock with a bunch of other stuff mixed in (possibly some Polish?).
Another photo of "Baby"
Oh, dear! I bought a little 2-week old pullet from the feed store about a month ago, to keep a little abandoned chick (my neighbor gave me) company. She looks like the one on the right! Oh, dear!
Oh my gosh, that's awful! So sorry to hear about it. It's one of my big fears. We've planned our coop and run in hopes of it being predator-proof. But still, one never knows.
Thanks for the feedback. I was pretty much of the same opinion. These were st. run chicks - mixes - or "just chickens" as the guy at the feedstore said. "Take all six, or none", he said. So I took all six, plus Baby, who is named Baby because it (he?) is a week younger. All except Baby and...
I got 7 assorted chicks from the feed store that are now about 7 weeks old. I got 7 in hopes of having at least 5 hens, since we don't want roosters, or at least no more than one. Now I'm so attached to all of them that I can't bear the thought of getting rid of any!
What do they look like...
