    Feed versus Scratch

This is all there is. I know protein content is important for growing chickens. They’re 15 weeks old now.

    Feed versus Scratch

I have been raising my brother’s chickens until he gets a coop. It’s both of our first time having chickens. I told him they need a new bag of feed. He bought this. This isn’t labeled grower feed. It’s scratch. He knows about grower feed. He bought their first bag. I bought their second...

If you could communicate a thought to your chickens, what would it be?

This sand is your dust bath. Flopping around on top the grass is just exercise.

    Dust Bathing in the Grass

Chickens…this is the first time I’ve had them…have surprised me at how much is instinct. The one exception is dust bathing. I know they have the instinct. They flop around in the pine shavings when they’re inside, so I put sand with some ashes in a big tub outside in their run to bathe in it...

    Young rooster chasing hens

Stu’s comb and wattles are red. The pullets combs are still pale.

    Young rooster chasing hens

This was the exact question I logged on to ask. They are all 14 weeks old (six female, one male), and “Stu the Roo” (a Wyandotte) began chasing the Black Star today with what seemed like obvious intentions. I told him, “y’all are too young for that!” How old are roosters when they start mating?

What kind of sand for dust bath?

I bought the construction sand. I read that if they eat play sand, it’s fine enough that it could impact their crop. But people appear to use it, so it’s probably fine to use.

Time for adult grit at 11 weeks?

I began giving them adult grit with the grower grit. They eat it all. If I recall correctly, someone said that they will eat it when they need it and know when to stop. They must have really needed it, because they ate a lot before they slowed down. I began using a small bowl, and these days...

Time for adult grit at 11 weeks?

Dirt yes, but there’s no grit in the dirt. It’s just dirt.

What kind of sand for dust bath?

I was thinking of putting sand in one part of the coop. It’s where the roosting bars are. I thought with sand I could scoop out the poop. The birds like to “dust” bathe in the pine shavings in that area. That’s why I thought I’d replace the shavings with sand, so I could get the poo out...

    Chicken dust bath

I’ve used DE, and the birds sneeze. If I stop, will the sneezing stop?

Time for adult grit at 11 weeks?

The birds eat chick grit like it’s food. There are seven of them, and I throw out about 5-6 handfuls of chick grit, and it’s always gone by the time they go back in. I saw there is grower grit (between chick and adult) and layer grit (adult chickens). Can 11 week old chickens eat adult grit now?

    Poo changed on grass

I think that’s it. Thank you. I’ve never heard of cecal poop.

    Do you clean a chicken?

Chickens are a couple months old now. One got pooped on. Do you do anything to clean it or just let it dry, and it will eventually flake off?

    Poo changed on grass

Since the young chickens have been out on grass, their poo has become dark brown and very smelly. (Not every single one, but a lot.) Is this normal? I’m new to chickens.
