Do we think this chicken can heal?

Update: Our girl made it. Posting for a reference if anyone is in the same situation. We followed the advice given in this thread and I also used chat gpt for insight on her wound progress as needed and around the 3 week mark we were able to reintegrate her with the rest of our flock. Her eating...

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Wow that’s amazing. I did not try that. Thankfully she finished her course of antibiotics before she started rejecting food too much. The last day was challenging. I’m not 100% that the antibiotics are the cause of her food refusal, but just a hunch.

Do we think this chicken can heal?

I did the neosporin ointment until this weekend (10 days) and then switched to the vetricyn plus hydrogel. I might alternate with neosporin as the scab continues to lift, but with the spray I can get it underneath the scab and the ointment was just sitting on top. Yes, I feel like I’ve tried...

Do we think this chicken can heal?

S’more (my daughter named her) is making good progress. One side is looking a lot better and the scab on the worst side of her wound is starting to lift. I’m rinsing with saline now 1-2x daily and using vetricyn and vetricyn hydrogel. She finished her 10 day course of antibiotics but it seems...

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Here’s an update photo. There is little to no odor, but some yellowing in the middle and black scab-like areas in the middle. Has anyone used silver honey spray before? I read in a separate place that can be good for these types of wounds. She definitely still seems alert and is eating not a ton...

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Just a little update, hopefully documenting a successful recovery. This is about 48 hours post injury. The photo shows is taken from above to show how her tissue is separated from the bite. I have now done to washes with diluted hibiclens and applied antibiotic ointment. There is still a bit of...

Ok thank you will run to the store now. Is Meloxicam or Meloxidyl something you can secure without an rx?

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Thanks for the encouragement. I just trimmed feathers and applied a topical antibiotic. I feel like her wound does smell a bit. This is the best photo I could get after trimming until I have help holding her. It appears she was bitten almost all the way around her tail right above her cloaca...

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Also should I trim feathers around the wound. I thought perhaps keeping it covered would prevent her from picking at it and keep flies away.

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. So helpful! She doesn’t seem to be in shock to me. Is eating scrambled eggs. I have been putting electrolytes in her water. On one side the wound is pretty gaping, it’s hard to get a picture of it on my own. But this view from a photo my partner and I...

Do we think this chicken can heal?

Writing in hopes of getting some perspective. One of my girls flew out of their yard today into our main yard, which is pretty difficult to do, and our dog chased and bit her before I could intervene. She doesn’t seem to be in shock and is eating and drinking. I gave her some pain meds we had...

    Chicken in distress

We did, but I suppose we could have missed something small. As for the latter that is entirely possible. It does seem like she’s straining to lay, though I can’t feel an egg. We did give her some electrolyte water the day this started and she has been acting much happier and healthier, eating...
