    Got sand? You should!

Our birds had already scratched the majority of foliage, we did go in and pull out most of what was left. We too put 3-4" of sand, and they love it. Much easier to cull out the "fertilizer!"

    Got sand? You should!

Thank you for the smack to the back of my head!! We have been mulling over this subject for a month. Our first try at chickens. Currently, we have an elevated hen house with the floor being 1/4" metal mesh. You suggest me putting a thin wood subfloor with sand on top? How thick is the sand?

    Predators

Well, our new pen appears to have withstood its first attack from raccoons. I don't feel so bad about how obsessive I was when I tacked the fencing. I will reinforce. I think I might go ahead and horseshoe nail every part of the fence. Is it safe to say "we can never be too safe?"

Old coop, new pen, first birds!

Really pleased how it turned out, we have acquired 3 Barred Rocks, and 1 each of the following: Leghorn, RI Red, Black Star, and a Buff Orpington. I'm really enjoying this!

    Expecting Chickens, by Spring 2013

Hey folks. I expect to have 3-4 chickens in the Spring. I have pretty much decided on Easter Eggers, since N Texas can be hot in the summer. Any other breeds that are "heat-hearty" y'all recommend?
