You could be writing about my chicken. She is 1.5 years old and doing the exact same things. I am keeping an eye on her every couple of hours during the day. Her crop doesn’t seem to be empty completely in the morning. So I have been giving her poultry cell every other day for nutritional...
She has been molting for about a month now. Her feathers are growing back in slowly, but she is very lethargic. She is eating and drinking, but when I let the chickens out of the coop in the morning, she hops down from the roost and stands in the corner. She will go outside after a bit and...
Thanks, Mrs. K. I didn’t lower them after seeing her jump up on a perch in the run that is a good 45 inches high. I did give her (and the other four girls a dose of vitamins). She seems to be doing better. She still walks backward, but I just consider that one of her “quirks “. She walks...
My leghorn has trouble getting on the roost at night, it is about 34 inches off the ground. She also is having trouble getting into the nesting box, which is about 8 inches off the ground. She only has been having trouble the last few days. From about 10 weeks old, she walks backwards a lot...
Is it possible to spray the ground in my sand chicken run While the girls are in there? I have a lot of those tiny red ants and have tried DE, but that did nothing to the ants. I would like to spray the ground in the run with permethrin, but not sure if that is safe for my chickens. Input...
I have 5 hens. 2 blue australorps, 2 white leghorns, and one black australorp. All are about 20 months, except for the black, she is about 15 months. They all seem to get along fairly well, with one of the leghorns being the “boss” of the flock. However, in the last couple of days, one of the...
I have six hens. Two were bought when my first four were already 2 months old (I bought 4, but two turned out to be roosters and had to go). So I use Flock Raiser. Then give oyster shells on the side. The young ones didn’t need the extra calcium and the older ones began laying and needed it...
I have 6 hens. My head hen (white leghorn) is making it her life’s mission to harass my sole speckled sussex. My speckled has gone broody and so, I go out and take her off the nest four or five times a day . When my speckled gets taken out into the run and put up on a roost, my head hen...
Just FYI…I have my run surrounded along the outside (so the girls can’t get them) by marigolds, citronella, and mint. Still have mosquitoes and flies. Don’t know for sure if I have less than I would without them. Florida creek area, so they can be pretty bad.
Yes. She sort of stands out in the flock, so I attribute it to that. She is very sweet and that seems to make her more of an easy target. I had another speckled and another black australorp along with them, but they turned out to be roos, so I had to relocate them to a nearby farm…no roos...
My flock: 2 Blue Australorps, 2 White Leghorns, (all four are 14 months) and 1 Speckled Sussex 1 Black Australorp (both one year old this month). My coop is 8’ x 10’ shed attached to an 8 x 14’ enclosed run.
