My hens are feasting on the cicadas! I let them out every morning, and it's a race to the best bushes. They quickly learned exactly which bushes and trees have the most. At first they just picked them off the ground, but now they hop up and pluck them off the leaves... makes me laugh every time...
I'm so glad you made it up there, and are happy with your chicks! My four are over a year old now, and laying so many eggs. They've been happy and healthy. Right now they're feasting on cicadas... do you have those down there? Good luck with your coop!
I also got a Leghorn instead of an Easter Egger last year, and I didn't know any better for quite awhile. When I figured it out, I was disappointed, but it was too late to start over. Now, she's my absolute favorite hen! She's mostly quiet, has so much personality, and has only missed 3 days of...
Check Loudonberry Farm near Leesburg, I think they have Buff Orpingtons. I've been very happy with the 4 hens I got there last year. I wish I had room for some Buff Orpingtons!
One of my hens molted in December and January, and it was only her tail and some feathers on her neck. She also stopped laying. She did look pretty silly for awhile, and the others actually bullied her until most of her feathers grew back. She even slept in the nest box for about a week. Maybe...
One of my four hens seems to be the lookout, and she makes this sound as a warning. The others stop what they're doing and stare in whatever direction she's looking. Sometimes I see what she's looking at, usually a fox in the woods, but often I can't figure it out. As someone else said, maybe...
Right now I only have 4 hens, and they are for eggs. As someone above said, they were a pandemic project. I've been surprised by how much personality they have, and how much I enjoy watching them! I guess you could say they are "working pets." If I had the space, I would like to have a rooster...
Mine started at 18 1/2 weeks, and hasn't missed a day since! I didn't want leghorns, got her by accident (mis-identified and I didn't know any better.) She's now my favorite chicken!
I have a Barred Rock who's been laying for about 3 weeks. She sings the egg song right BEFORE laying, and is quiet afterwards! She stands at the top of the ramp and loudly announces her imminent egg, then ducks into the nest box. My other three don't sing at all. Chickens are crazy.
My Easter Egger does that all morning, pacing back and forth before she lays an egg, then she's quiet and happy. She's only been laying for about two weeks. To me she just sounds very grumpy and inconvenienced by the whole egg thing! :p
I have one Easter Egger. She started laying at 21 weeks, and her eggs are a light green. Hers is the middle one in the picture. She's crazy and skittish and loud, but I do love her eggs!
