One of my 4 year old hens has a small pupil, irregular in shape and my concern is obviously Mareks.
She appears well in every other way. She is not blind in that eye as I checked by moving a finger close to each eye and she blinked each time.
Photos show both eyes. Any opinions?
Thank you for your reply. I can not be sure who lays which egg as I have another 4 hens the same breed and at 3 it is sporadic for all of them.
Sadly she died last night.
I have a 3 and a half year old layer. She is a dark sussex.
I noticed her today in the coop looking a bit fluffed up.
Popped in a bit later and she is obviously not well. I picked her up and she had a crop full of water. Her breath does not smell which is why I don't think it is sour crop...
We do have white tail sea eagles and golden eagles but they don't come down into the area that the hens are. When our small ducks enclosure is built it will be roofed. There used to be mink but they were eradicated. The only predator re really would be in someone's ferret escaped.
It is...
All done, thank you for the heads up.
It is a stunning island with no foxes which is a real blessing. The chooks put themselves to bed when they feel like it.
@Isaac 0 they were just out on the floor while I took the photo video. They had towels on the floor for the first 2 weeks and now they have non slip matting and shavings.
We had not noticed a problem until the last few days but then again it was the first time the mandarin had the opportunity to charge about on the floor. It has always been less busy than the runner.
The chick was hatched by someone locally from shipped eggs. She had a poor hatch rate and only 2...
I have contacted Allen and Page who make the crumb. The chick starter crumb has 61mg/kg and the waterfowl crumb has 59 mg/kg
The growers which is the next one up has 40.7 mg/kg and the duck grower has 57 mg/kg
I had kind of hoped it would have been too low so that I could have changed the food...
Thank you for your replies. I found the niacin deficiency thread late last night and it seems to be the most likely.
I am in the UK and feed small holder range chick crumbs which show they are suitable for waterfowl too but there is no mention of B vitamins on the label. I have looked at the...
I have a mandarin duckling who is about 2 and a half weeks old.
He spends a lot of time sat down and his big brother from another mother does normally steal the limelight.
We had them out earlier and introduced them to a few mealworms when we noticed the mandarin was talking with an inward...
Ok, will do.
She has layers pellets adhoc as well as a handful of mixed corn at night. Veg scraps and lots of egg shells in the garden. Cabbages thrown out for them to pack at. Live mealworms as a little treat sometimes. They free run in the garden.
Wifey ate the egg today and said there...
Thank you for the link.
I am not too sure which hen it is right now. But it is not the younger birds as it is the wrong colour so that would make her 3 years old.
We have not had any illnesses in the flock for quite some time. I would be surprised if it is too much calcium as her shells are...
