Elizmartin, your rooster in your avatar is a beaute. He reminds me of my 3 roo's I had to part ways because of county codes.
To make a long story short, I had acquired 6 baby chicks last September and hadn't a clue as to the breed. All I knew is I had 6 black chicks. It turned out, I had 3...
donrae....
I'm so excited!!! My first hen (Cuddles) has finally produced the first egg of the coop on Saturday, January 25!!! It was a a perfectly-shaped, pale brown...almost pink egg. My husband has been teasing me...claiming I had "Steers" (his nickname for hens who don't produce). I've had...
Hi donrae. Good to hear from you!!!
It is definitely a waiting game in the egg laying department. I remember years ago with my first backyard chicks (an FFA project)...it seemed to take forever and my hens lived to 8 years old. It would've been longer for one of my hens, but a gnarly, nasty...
An update to my 6 chooks. The boys (three of them) have returned to the farm they came from. Oh, what beauties they have become with their iridescent green tail feathers, the spotted chests and white manes. Of all, I miss Peeps the most. His whimsical behavior always brought a smile to my...
My three roosters, when they aren't sparring with each other, appear to act as if they are mother hens to each other, even preen each other. We have a direct view of the coop from our patio and are using a heat lamp on extremely cold nights. Through the window on the coop, we observe the three...
slpmom, welcome fellow newbie!!! We too have six chickens we've hand raised from the age of 2 weeks. They're about 14 weeks old now and three have decided to serenade the neighborhood at 5 am this weekend...not a good thing considering we live on a 10,000 sq ft lot just outside the city limits...
I am soooo excited. A relative of mine has shared a photo of who I claim as Big Daddy to my chooks. He IS a beauty!!! One of my birds, his offspring...has lemon markings on the shoulders (hope, hope, hope to be the same in looks and stature).
What a gorgeous rooster you have! In recent months, I acquired 6 chicks...was trying to find if there was a certain breed three of them were and discovered I might have some olive eggers in my clutch. Much to my frustration...I believe I may have more roos than hens, though. One of my 13 week...
My latest update...
It's official...at least 2 of the barred chicks (now 12 1/2 weeks old) are definitely roos. The third barred remains quiet. The two shared in a morning serenade...rough as they sounded, but they definitely crowed. One is remaining grey and white (Mojo) but the other now has...
At what age do I begin to transition my chicks out of chick feed and into adult feed? They're already roaming the yard (backyard farmer here) and have enjoyed what they have found in the way of proteins and greens. Right now, they're about 9 1/2 weeks old.
Thanks!
You're right! I was lucky to "inherit" at least three little hens. This morning, the barred one with the most feathers on the legs let out his first...adolescent...crow. It sounded like a pre-teen trying to talk with a bunch of potato chips in his mouth.
I forgot what it was like to have...
Thanks so much for responding, donrae. I guess the term "Sex Links" is a good one for this batch of misfits that I enjoy so much. I still have a few other questions that maybe you can answer for me, so your patience is greatly appreciated. The father of the chicks closely resembles that of a...
