Steve, thanks for your opinion. I appreciate advice, since this is only my second time with broilers.
I have to say, the poop is just on their feathers---I haven't yet had a vent stuck closed. So maybe it's not as big a deal as I thought.
Thanks again!
Chicks will be five weeks old tomorrow, and I still have some with the runny poop. I've been giving the yogurt daily, which they seem to love.
Is there anything else I could try? Do they need a medication of some kind?
I'm thinking of going up later today and separating out the ones that...
Good to know about the water. That's one thing I stay very on top of, so no worries there.
I took the feed mixed with yogurt, and they had a field day. Crossing my fingers!
Holding firm at 48 Ranger chicks, four weeks old.
I had a few pasty bums within the first week. Nothing major, no one died of it.
Here's my question---as of this week, I've noticed at least ten of the Rangers have issues with poop sticking to the feathers coming out beneath their vent. I've...
We had trouble just before they were two weeks old.
Tim---I'm glad that you mentioned that plenty of people have raised healthy Rangers without anything adding anything extra to their diet. That was my assumption all along, and the reason I ordered Rangers in the first place---because they...
Hi all,
You may have seen my thread on problems I had with my Freedom Rangers this week. I wanted to make this a different post to make sure I reached as many people as I could.
Anyway---I had four of my chicks go lame this week. Luckily, I called the hatchery right away. They were kind and...
Good news! When I checked on the chicks this morning, all four of the lame chicks are up and walking again! You can tell them from the others; they're a little unsteady on their legs. One still has a little difficulty with the very ends of his toes uncurling. But they are all walking on...
That's interesting about the litter. I wonder what the difference is between hardwood and softwood shavings? Whether it's an issue of softness, or is there a particular tree in the litter that isn't good for them?
Well, I checked on them this morning. Of the four that were walking funny...
They were on the Dumor chick starter from Tractor Supply, which is 20% protein.
When I went to the local feed store, they recommended Kalmbach game bird grower crumbles. I just checked the tag, and it's only 20% protein. It's medicated with Bacitracin, which I didn't realize. I've always fed...
I just got off the phone with the folks at J. M. Hatchery. She said that the chicks do not usually suffer from leg problems, that Joel usually attributes problems to a lack of nutrition in their feed.
They recommended getting a vitamin supplement into the water a.s.a.p., and switching over to...
When we ordered from JM Hatchery, I didn't see vaccinations as an option on their website---so, no.
But now, I'm wondering if I'm killing them by having food available too much. I never removed the food when we did the Buckeyes, because they're a slower growing bird.
I thought that the...
(Background---This is only my second time raising broilers. Two years ago, we did a very healthy batch of Buckeyes---only lost one. They were tasty, but scrawny. This time, we upped to Freedom Rangers due to the good reviews I had read.)
I received a batch of 51 Freedom Ranger chicks two...
Great discussion on straw bale coops!
Philadelphia Phlock---thanks for posting the link to my blog. I couldn't figure out why my counter had jumped so much in two days. Now I know it was thanks to the BYC community!
We've had our coop up & running since November, and I am quite pleased with...
