New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

I did change the bedding a couple of times since Maggie passed. I will have to do it again and maybe spray the walls and floors. I might add another roost a little higher as well, though I think they're not supposed to be very high for Jersey Giants cause they're so heavy. Might have to be...

New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

I have done that over and over and they just keep going back to the nesting box. I cleaned the coop a couple time since Maggie passed and I might just have to close the nesting box off for a while since they're not laying anyway. Thanks

New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

Yeah, she did die in the coop. She was 11 years old, so died of old age, no predator or anything like that. Maybe I'll change things around a bit so it looks different?

New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

I'm in Wisconsin, but Jersey Giant are supposed to be year-round layers. Even my Australorp laid an occasional egg in the darker months.

New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

The coop is 6x10. The nesting box is in a bunny hutch, so they have to walk up two ramps (one into the hutch and one into the nesting area) to get into it, whereas the roost is in the coop that is a couple of feet off of the ground with a ramp going in and then the roost is about another 1 1/2...

New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

These are on their own. I had one old hen left that took them in pretty well, but she is gone now. That's when they started not roosting.

New Jersey Giants sleeping in nesting box

Hi all, so I have 4 New Jersey Giants. I've been having various chicken breeds within the last 12 years and never had much of a problem with the ladies not using the coop to sleep at night. While my Australorp was still alive, the Jersey Giants slept on the roost. She died of old age about 6...

    Found coon tonight

Chickens are still safe. I started putting hardware cloth on the inside of the roof now. Did that yesterday where the holes were and continuing until it's all done. Fort Knox to be continued..lol. I also put Cayote urine around the coop, so hopefully that will deter as well.

    Found coon tonight

Since losing one of my chicken to a predator (probably a coon) in the past, I made my coop a fortress, or so I thought. I used hardware cloth and doubled that up with chicken wire on the inside (since I already had chicken wire I left it). I also put cement all the way around, so nothing can dig...

Too cold? 10 year old Easter Egger and almost 1 year old Jersey Giants -15F

Thank you. Another 3 months and she'll be 11. I've had my share of predators, but I've been lucky. I have a fenced in yard with 6 feet on 3 sides and 4 on the other. They get to run free in it during the day. At night I put them into Fort Nuggets. After one of my chickens got stolen at night by...

Too cold? 10 year old Easter Egger and almost 1 year old Jersey Giants -15F

Hi, I normally am not worried about the cold. I do have a heat lamp in there that I only use when it gets below 10F. It's a fairly large coop, but I can close the doors and I do have a small vent hole in the top. What worries me is that my Maggie is almost 11 years old and my Jersey Giants are...

    Crowing 10 year old hen

She now quit crowing and has laid two eggs (did I mention she's 10 years old..lol). I haven't had an egg from her in over a year. Maggie crowed every morning there for a while, but not during the day. She started crowing before I got the new batch, so not sure what started the crowing, but I'm...

    Crowing 10 year old hen

So I have this crowing 10 year old hen. She's the only one left of the 5 gals I got at the same time. When I got my new ones, she didn't crow right away. I had them for a year and these last few weeks Maggie has been crowing every morning. I know there are things like spontaneous sex change...

    Mimi still Wheezing/Parasite confirmed

In my previous thread I was talking about my almost 10 year old bird Mimi. She has steadily been losing weight and has been wheezing since January 1st. I have treaded her twice with safeguard and twice with Ivermectin. Both orally. Every time I pick her up I feel like something is crawling...

    1 month and still wheezing

First off, there is no Avian vet anywhere close to where I live. The closest is about a hour away from my house. So on January 1st I made a post about Mimi, my 10 year old. She's been wheezing and I have tried treating her for different things. The first treatment was Fenbendazole for...
