    Supplement lighting during winter

I've heard mixed reviews on using supplement lighting during the winter. Is it harmful and does it cut into their laying life span? Been told chicken will lay 6-7 years without, but only about 2.5 with light. I want to do what's best for my flock. I use lights, same as for a brooder to help heat...

My one and only Easter egged laid me a different color

While on the different colored eggs I would love to add some color to the light brown/beige eggs of my RIRs and Barred Rock, my so-sold Americana lays green. Purchased chicks for weeks ago two of each Barred Rocks, Australorps, and Americans, one didn't make it. So if all goes well will add...

Laying an egg without a shell?

Added golf balls to the boxes, no more pecking other's eggs, but she's still laying soft eggs. don't understand as she eats what the others do and they have nice hard shelled eggs.

Laying an egg without a shell?

Oh, yeah, the egg eater is going. I just have to figure out which one of the RIRs is the guilty party. Hate to condemn the wrong bird.

Laying an egg without a shell?

I too have a hen laying soft shell eggs. She then proceeds to eat not only her egg, but any others in the nest. I know it's one of my reds, not sure which one. I've yet to see any of the 3 reds on the nest. Found the remains of a couple of eggs this morning. Any suggestions?

Rhode Island Red age of laying

I started this flock last July. Got the RIRs as I was told the best all around chicken, cold/heat hardy, good layers, non-aggressive. I will NEVER purchase another nor would I recommend them. My experience with them has not been favorable. I would pass them along, but I couldn't bear to know...

Rhode Island Red age of laying

By far the honey of the bunch is the Barred Rock! My Ameraucana is a sweetie, too. Everything I've heard says they're skittish. My reds aren't mean, not the most friendly unless food is involved, then they can be a bit aggressive. Have 1 Black Wyandotte that is REAL nasty. Heard they were...

Rhode Island Red age of laying

I have a Barred Rock that started laying at 6 months which was during a below 0 two week stretch. She has layed every day since. Eggs are medium sized, but no biggie for me. Also have an Ameraucana same age that's been laying 4-5 eggs a week, medium eggs as well. RIRs are starting to lay, but...

    Better egg layer

Thank you. I have a Rock started laying about month ago, she's giving 5-6 eggs a wk, so real pleased. Have 3 RIRs, not sure on the age, was told spring batch when I purchased in July. Also have a black hen, have no idea the breed, assuming a mutt as no one can tell me for sure. Has coloration of...

    Better egg layer

Looking to add a few pullets to my flock. I'm torn between Australorps and Ameruacanas. I have 1 ameruacana, she's been laying about a month with no regularity. Not sure this is the breed or the weather. I want a durable good layer. Which breed is best?

    First Time Laying

This morning while fixing breakfast I heard the strangest sounds coming from my coop area. I put on boots and rush out thinking perhaps a predator. No, it's my roo singing what I've learned from others the egg laying song! I look in the nesting box to find one of my RIRs . None of my hens do...

Rhode Island Red age of laying

Don't feel bad, I have 3 RIRs that aren't laying. Not sure their age, I bought them in July told spring peeps. They lost some feathers shortly after I purchased, assumed molting, so thought that's why not laying. Been several months and still nothing. Their combs are brightening and I've...

    Behaviour before laying

I have 3 FIRST that I've had since July. Got a few eggs first couple of days, but nothing since. Understand stress of move, then molted, crazy heat, and finally winter. Their combs and wattles have been bright for couple weeks. Have noticed last few days they're peeping like much younger birds...
