Mareks. Can we ever get chickens again?

In current news, I picked up the two young Delaware hens on Wednesday. They have been living in the run with a dog crate while Olive continues to free range and have the coop. Things are going well so far. To my surprise, everyone has continued to lay during this transition! There was some...

Mareks. Can we ever get chickens again?

Sonya9, thank you so much for this! Really helpful info. I would like to try to get some of that antiviral. My problem is finding a chicken vet in my area. I had one I loved but he retired and I can’t find anyone else. When my girl got mauled by a dog I had to take her to the exotic bird...

Yep! Pretty is as pretty does. And we see how beautiful she is now!

Mareks. Can we ever get chickens again?

Interestingly, the three chickens we lost to Mareks were gorgeous…two beautifully marked Bluebells and one very pretty Lavender Orpington with the fluffiest pantaloons. I admit, I bought them for their looks. Olive was almost an after thought, added just to round out a flock of four. She is a...

Mareks. Can we ever get chickens again?

Like most things, we humans tend to create our own problems, don’t we? I think about it every time we have to chop back more Himalayan blackberry vines which constantly try to consume our pastures. But the berries are delicious! Ha. My goodness, your description of those Fayoumis! They sound...

How long should we quarantine? And since Olive is a single bird and we are introducing two bonded pullets (6 months old), is there a chance they will pick on her rather than the other way around?

Mareks. Can we ever get chickens again?

Ok, I am taking a chance on two Delaware pullets. The farm has been breeding for immunity for several years. They don’t vaccinate but cull any sick chickens. It sounds a little brutal, but I do understand the end goal. I hope it is effective. She said she hasn’t had any sick birds for 6-7 yrs...

A neighbor mentioned to me that Dorkings might be resistant as well..does anyone here have info regarding that?

I’m sure it helps to be vaccinated but all three of ours who died were too. It feels like too much of a risk to me that one would get it anyway.

That’s true! Hadn’t thought of that, but that rules out hatching eggs for me. We wouldn’t be capable of culling any roosters either. We have chickens for eggs but they are also pets.

Mareks. Can we ever get chickens again?

Yeah, I feel like it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future ): A resistant breed seems like the only option if we don’t want to risk more sickness
