thanks guys, for you help,
turns out it was a parasite called histomas, I think gotten from being in a pen that had previously held a few adult chickens - which is the kind of thing you do if you have never done this before ;)
Anyway, the only medication recommended for this is available...
Hello all
I'm hoping that your collective wisdom will help me figure out what is going on with my turkey flock.
I've got a small flock of bourbon red and blue slate birds, mixed genders that are about 11 weeks old. they have been doing great so far, and a few weeks ago, I moved them into a...
I sell eggs at a farmers market in Ohio, and although there are no washing laws here, I wash them with warm water and white vinegar. I also build a little egg jacuzzi that shoots air bubbles through a bucket of water (similar to the incredible egg washer but loads cheaper)
I have heard that...
Hey guys
I'm re-posting this here because I think it's a more appropriate place...
Anyway, I have thirty seven, 2 to 3 week old Bourbon Red and Blue Slate poults.
Yesterday I noticed that their poop had a reddish tinge to it - kind of a red brick color.
I'm worried that it's blood, which...
I'm not sure Corid will work for turkeys because they are effected by different strains of the disease than chickens.
Also, the poo is not as bloody as my research shows it would be with coccidia. It's just kindof a red brick color.
... thoughts?

Hi guys
Today I noticed that here is some blood in my turkeys poop.
They are 2 and 3 week old bourbon red and blue slate turkeys. I keep them in a brooder build in a closed off porch, and that space has worked great so far. There are 37 of them.
I haven't noticed any strange or lethargic...
thanks guys,
And just for the record, my intention was never to keep them in such a small pen.
I have plans to build a much bigger tractor and transfer them next week. This is just a brooder pen. They just grew out of it faster than my last batch apparently.
Even when I asked the hatchery...
just out of curiosity, I feel like everything I've read about keeping chickens says 1 foot of space per bird.
Even in pastured poultry articles/books etc.
This obviously isn't enough at all..... in what situation would that be enough, and why does it seem to be such a common number to come...
they are in a bottomless pasture pen and are moved every day.
There aren't a lot of multi-level diversion I guess, but I feel like new forage should keep them busy enough? The pen i 8X8, and I think it's too small - but my other group of New Hampshires and Dominiques did fine in that space...
Hey Chickeners,
So, about 5 weeks ago I ordered 100 chicks - all roosters. The hatchery advertised them as a fry pan bargain, and since I'm raising meat birds, I decided to try them.
They are all different breeds, Ancona, Wyandotte, Australorpe, Orpington, etc.
About a week and a half ago, I...
Hey guys,
was hoping you could help me with a question.
I'm raising 25 New Hampshire Reds in a pasture pen (along with several other breeds) They are at 9 weeks now, and I'm planning to process them for market at 12 weeks.
They have access to a standard grower feed mix, fresh water, and...
Hey everyone,
I've got a flock of week-old heritage chickens, Khaki Campbell and Rouen ducks. They are looking pretty good right now, but I'd like to have a source of electrolytes on hand for ones that might need some extra attention.
I've seen a lot of vitamin and electrolyte mixes for poultry...
Hi everyone!
I just received my first shipment of khaki campbels yesterday! Man are they cute!
I have one I'm a bit worried about though. He is a bit smaller and significantly lighter than the others, is really shaky on his feet, tires easily, and I've seen him breathing hard a few times...
