This snake killed a chick! Now they won't roost in the coop!

If you can watch the snake if they are inside a coop get its attention then watch where it tries to escape. Lot of times they will use the same way they got in and it will show you where the weak point is.

    Snakes in the coop

Depends on the coop materials. Wire should be small square loops, smaller the better. If the coop is a free standing style you can put wire on the bottom. If it rains a snake can find the smallest point and basically tunnel it’s way in. If you use corrugated tin like I have. Use those matching...

Dog attack, severely injured hen need advice

Can’t offer anymore advice then what you are already doing. Up to her now. Our small pullet hen Little Bit was in a death clutch of a snake. I fought for and got her free. The mrs nursed her and thank goodness she eventually pulled through. But all we can do is wait and hope they don’t give up...

    Speckled Sussex?

Here are my speckled Sussex. As chicks they were dark as well, had some white but as they grew and started the first molt the spots really came out

    do chickens talk back ?

Yes, I believe they do. One of our hens we named Possum catches attitude. She lays on her left side with one leg kicked behind her like she is dead…hence the name. Told her to get the other girls up in the roost cause a storm was blowing in. She ignored me and played dead so I said “I know you...

    Poisonous snakes

Have gone around and reenforced where a second snake may have entered the coop, we lost another bird, the girl we named Pecker for always pecking the tin. He actually ate her and he couldn’t escape. He also paid with his life…did sharpen the machete. Started with 12 and now have 8 pullets, two...

    Poisonous snakes

Have been getting some good pointers from these posts. In order for my birds to have the most visibility for predators, I have removed everything from the coop that could hide a potential predator. Don’t want anybody to get ambushed. We live we learn. Keep the posts coming.

Pullet killing snake paid the price. Help identify!! I vote Cottonmouth

No rodent issue with two prolific mousers around. They earn there keep. In the dark with one of my birds dead…did not hesitate to take it out. Should have stuck mice and rats.

Pullet killing snake paid the price. Help identify!! I vote Cottonmouth

That was my second choice, only lost one pullet and he paid for it. Had light shorts and flip flops and my machete protecting the rest of the babies.
