    Anybody seen this before?

It kind of looks like a molt based on pictures I've seen on here. I wouldn't be surprised if she is about 2 years old. I heard they will molt once a year at least.

Chicken losing feathers--is this normal? (pictures included)

When my chicks were about 17-18 weeks old they must have had a molt and I had no idea. I just noticed an explosion of feathers and they were everywhere, in my yard, in their coop. I raked many of them up, once they were in the grass it was kind of hard though. In the coop, I took the shop vac...

    Golf Balls

I used ping pong balls, they were cheaper than the golf balls. I put 2 in, and 1 was immediately kicked out. The 2nd one lasted a couple weeks of laying and then it got the boot.

    Feeding Organic?

We feed our chickens organic. It's $15 for a 20 lb. bag, and it takes me 5-6 weeks for my 3 chickens. Honestly, the only reason I feed them organic is because I can afford to as I don't have a big flock. I wouldn't be so keen on it if I had a large flock. The other reason is that I had...

Longest time waiting on egg from RIR? with pics

Their wattles are quite big and they are all very red in the face. My BR was about that size of comb and wattles when she started laying. Here is my RIR today. Sorry for having to snap a shot through the hard wire cloth but it's not free ranging time yet.

Longest time waiting on egg from RIR? with pics

My RIR is 24 weeks today and I'm still waiting on her first egg. Her wattles and comb are bright red and ginormous! The comb flops over. I'm positive she's a hen, she has been squatting maybe a week for me.

Our 2nd hen laid her first egg and question about pecking

I ran outside in a panic because it sounded like something was attacking the hens, I had never heard such a commotion... It was just my BO who had laid her first egg today. OMG she was loud and proud! My BR has been laying an egg everyday for almost 3 weeks and I thought I'll have no idea...

    question aobut soft shell eggs...

Are you offering crushed oyster shell? I have mine in a small plastic dish that is nailed down...otherwise they just spill it all over willy nilly. My feed store sells it by the pound or you can get a 50 lb. bag for $10. It will last you forever because they don't seem to eat a lot of it...

I set the timer on extra light in the coop today... anyone else?

I put out a light and timer last week. It was going off about 5:30 am, I adjusted it a little, and was a little too much as it's going off now around 4am...I might steal my husband's digital timer.

Garden plants that chickens don't like to eat?

I love hydrangeas, but apparently so do my chickens. They have also nibbled at our lemon tree, it's not very big, almost killed by the frost last winter, it's recovering but gets pecked at by the girls but sparingly. We have oleander, which I'm told is quite poisonous to humans and chickens...

    Texas

Jellybean, I bought my 3 girls at Buck Moore back in April. They have done great, been healthy and I just got my first egg on Wed, my second today. I buy my feed there as well, they sell organic. I have bought a bag from Callahan's, but I didn't care for it, I'm sure the birds didn't care...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I am one proud mother hen!! Our very first ever egg from one of my 3 girls. I suspect it is the barred rock, Jeannette, she has been doing the egg squat for just under a week now. The egg is a little small, but it was perfect nonetheless, and tasted great! Store bought egg on the right...

First Egg! When can I expect my next one?! :D

Congratulations!! Don't you just love BR? I love mine. She is the only one of my 3 to be doing the egg squat, she just started doing it Friday. I was so excited. Anyway, don't have an answer for you but wanted to say "Go Dixie!!"

barred rock still not laying...........she did today!!!

I'm also waiting, trying to be patient but can't help being somewhat impatient, just excited I think. My BR, BO and RIR are just shy of 21 weeks old, and I think it's probably too early to be hoping they'll go anytime soon. I'm really ok with that, says the rational me. "A watched pot never...
