I have 2, two gallon buckets (one feeder, one waterer) that I will be hanging from a wooden bar inside the coop (my chicks are still in the brooder)..
The buckets only need to hang a few inches below the bar. Also, the buckets have flat plastic handles (no divot for a center hanger).
I...
I have the screw in nipples, all in one, not able to be taken apart. First I drilled a hole slightly smaller than the nipple threads... then wrapped the threads in plumbing thread sealant tape (it a thin gray tape), then screwed in the nipples. Using this method there are no leaks and zero...
I switched from a regular waterer to the nipples a few days ago, and I really love how well they are working. Everyone is drinking (I watched to make sure), and the water level is going down, with no leaks.
I've had my chicks home for 2 days now, and they've been dust bathing, scratching and pecking, fluttering across the brooder, and sitting on their little branch roost for 24 hours now. I forgot how fast they grow! They are SO cute, I swear every time I look they have more tiny wing feathers.
I just checked one of my chicks (a light brahma or buff orpington, they look pretty close right now). She has chick fluff growing all down one leg; it stops at the foot area. Legs and feet are normal otherwise.
Umm, is this just some odd mutation or ?? I'm imagining this poor chick growing...
Two years ago I raised 3 Buff Orpingtons, and they were SUPER loud compared to my 5 (1 buff, 1 light brahma, 1 barred rock, 2 ameracauna's) I picked up this morning. They are all eating, drinking, scratching, stretching, sleeping, and seem fine when I pick them up and check them out for pasty...
I'm sooooo excited, and no one else understands the excitement! The plan is to get 2 ameracaunas, 1 barred rock, 1 light brahma, and 1 buff orpington. Got to get the brooder set up tonight, which involves dumping out the tub we use for camping stuff, setting the heat lamp up, putting some sand...
There was a discussion on ACV related to corrosion of metal parts on waterers on this blog recently:

It says no more than 1 Teaspoon per gallon which is less than most people use.
Thanks Steve, that helps a lot! I'm sure I'll need to tweak things, but it helps to have a starting point. I'll end up wasting less time / materials this way :)
The kids this year wanted to add gardens, chickens, and a swing set (it's a Montessori school with lots of student input). So at...
My son's school is raising 5 chickens (to be permanent residents at the school). I'm in charge because a) I volunteered because I love chickens and b) I've had chickens before.
Anyway, because the chickens will be in their all in one coop over the weekends, and having food / water refilled by...
This fall my son's school chickens will begin laying and we want to give the eggs in batches of FOUR for the kids to take home (based on estimated laying, that will give all the kids some eggs to take home the first school year). The only place I've seen this size egg carton is on a craft site...
Great to know yours are still working out! My son's school is getting chickens, and I'm working out the very easiest / least messy way to feed in our wet climate. I've already planned on nipple waterers, and though I looked at the trigger feeder a few years ago, I never got one myself. The...
