It's been over 24 hours since I first discovered her crop and it hasn't gone down. It is still bone dry in there, no liquid at all that I can tell. I can actually hear whatever gritty substance is in there grinding together when I feel her crop. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't think...
Hoping to get a little insight here, I'm not sure what is up with my hen. I noticed there was some poopy gunk on my 1 yr old silkie hen's butt, so I took her inside to wash her off. She hasn't laid in a few days, and when washing her I felt her crop and it is VERY dry and gritty. When I'm...
It sounds like it could be Marek's. Do you know if she was vaccinated? This is a good bit of info on Marek's here: animalscience.ucdavis.edu/avian/mareks2.pdf

I'm so sorry I'm over a month late replying to this, for some reason I didn't get any notifications. :( I agree that yes, it is canker. I hope your hen is much better now.
I got it from Jeffer's in the pill form. (Fish zole is the specific product I used.) It came in 250 mg. form and I just gave her the whole pill because she's an orp and weighs more than my other girls. Your idea of soaking it in something he will eat sounds good, maybe yogurt or some scrambled...
That looks almost exactly like what one of my hens recently had, it was canker. I used the Metronidazole to treat her, and she is just fine now. :) As far as I know it will not hurt if it is pox or something else. (It really looks like canker to me though.)

I would go get a bag of grower feed/flock raiser and some oyster shell. Layer feed is too high in calcium for a 12 week old chicken, so you can just offer oyster shell for the layers in addition to a grower feed until she gets old enough. :)
Update - it is in fact canker. I just looked at her again closely this evening and there is a small spot starting down in her throat. I paid for rush shipping on the fish zole, so hopefully it will be here soon. I have isolated her and disinfected the waterer, I will disinfect the coop and area...
Thanks for all the info. I'm not entirely sure it's canker yet, but I can't find anything else besides pox that it might be and I'm fairly sure it's not pox. I don't want to wait until it's worse though, so I have ordered some of the fish zole just to be safe. The spots don't seem any larger...
Thanks. I'm not exactly sure what it is yet, because the spots are so small and local. I don't want to assume it's canker yet, but I will definitely keep an eye on it.
I'm hoping that someone will see this and know for sure what it is!
That's the clearest pic I can get, sorry. The roof of her mouth is clean. I noticed the spot out of the corner of my eye when she was panting. (It was 106 here today!) She doesn't pant excessively though. She free ranges in our yard, there are a few wild birds around, mostly scrub jays, doves...
