10-4 on the apples and melons !
Usually, the girls (2 am. buffs) are allowed free range all day then in at night. Problem is; the grass is greener in the neighbors yard - across the road! So you know how stubborn/smart geese can be...even if I fenced across there, they will figure out a way...
They started tugging on the bale as soon as I set it down...not for long though...cut the twine and shook some loose - lost interest quickly.
It is green and smells good..although I don't really see clover leaves.
The farmer recommended heating one part honey to two parts water (cool) and...
...what a great source of information you all put together; and thank you for the links.
Found a farmer not far that has 2nd cutting bales of rye-timothy-clover mixed (4.50) have appointment this morning to meet. FINGERS CROSSED THEY LIKE IT! Turned their noses up at soaked alfalfa...
When she stood up I saw a quarter size hole in one egg...and the little bugger is talking to mother goose. This is great; can't wait for the sun to shine this morning so I can see in the nest.
I took her lettuce and baby spinich last night for dinner; she must be exhausted and relieved to...
(wings feathering out now) with Sebbie Gander (fathered goslings). PETS ONLY. Must be capable of providing night time safe shelter. Pond / creek on property preferred. Very friendly, inquisitive birds. Local pick up only. Flock free to right farm. (4 goslings/ 1 gander) Also, 3 friendly...
I'm afraid if I take the eggs she will re-build somewhere and lay more...her nest is in the safety of the coop now. Also, don't want to loose her trust.
They are pure American buffs, in NE PA. I do have four sold and will allow two to stay with the parents; so that leaves 8 if they all hatch...
My vote is to take two...for companionship. Hopefully someone else can step in for the remaining ones. Don't worry about "trouble"...you are doing a good thing.
Have any of you shaken eggs to control population...or do you let them all hatch then scramble to find homes for the ones you do not wish to keep?
She stayed on the nest yesterday so they are still "just eggs"... I want to humanly control their gosling numbers.
This will be Lucy's first...
Nope, no luck here with the pellets either...she picked a little, did eat some but not crazy about it like I had hoped.
The pellets I was talking about are three or so inches long and two inches squared...dark green, no hay or molasses mixed in. (I had asked her for alfalfa). Agway sometimes...
I know they are intended for horses, however I'm seeking a "green" alternative for the grass they love so much. (Winter's in full swing here).
Romaine is a highly regarded treat they come running for but I can't give them a belly full daily ($).
What other options are out there?
I also am pleased with the American Buff choice (Metzer's). She too is inquisitive, quiet (until someone pulls into the driveway) and does catch air! So does the gander..they are a treat to watch.
More often than not; you will catch them watching you!
