    Our Coop

Thank you. My flock is a mellow bunch, I have 7 8week old chicks in the coop with them. Flock has accepted them, older hens are teaching them the pecking order when it comes to food. I put them out in there plastic brooder so the hens could smell them for a week or so, then I let them out.

    Our Coop

Our coop enclosure is a little different. My brother in law built a 12 by 12 enclosure for our chickens. It is inside a 3 side metal shed. I say the top ceiling rafters are 12 or more high feet high. Only the south side of the enclosure is exposed. South allows light not much drafts. If...

    Very Broody Cochin

She is getting up, and when I go out I will gently pick her up and set her on the ground were she will go eat, drink, and once took a quick dust bath. She has been sitting on eggs for over a month. I have a friend who is a veteran chicken person come and bring me some fertile eggs, they should...

    Feed Storage for flock

I use a 5 gallon metal trash can that I put inside a 13 gallon trash can on wheels. This has worked out well. Last you I found out that mice can chew through a plastic trash can, a friend of mind told me about the metal can. I have not had a problem since.

    Small holes in dirt?

I have similar holes this time of year near my coop. It is usually mice or vols (of the mole family) I put DE down the hole and out popped a mice and it was a treat for one of my chickens with everyone else running after her. I have also put DE down the holes with success.

    Very Broody Cochin

I have a very broody cochin named brown gravy(currently mama gravy :) ). We have called her Houdini as she keeps adding eggs to her pile and we don't know who she is doing it. I am thinking about moving her to a crate filled with straw, food water near by. I would have the door open for her...

What kind of multi vitamin do you use? Do you crush it up in the food, or put it with the oyster shell?

Topic of the Week - Moving chicks out of the brooder and into the coop

Got 7 chicks in September. I used an ecoglow as their heat source. Chicks loved the ecoglow and would come out to eat, play and go back under when needed. I also put in and ostrich feather duster. Took them a bit to figure out what it was but when they did, if was funny. 7 little chicks...

Moved 9 1/2 week chicks to coop and run.

They are 12 weeks old now. I will tell you they are smart little chickens.. I blocked off the nesting box in the coop, and was rather pleased with myself that I am teaching them that nesting box is not the nightly gathering place to form chickie pyramid. I decided to check on them after 3...

Moved 9 1/2 week chicks to coop and run.

I am happy to report that all of my chicks are putting themselves to bed on a regular basis now. My golden laced wynadotte is not a hen but a rooster least the name Crisco does not have to be changed. Found that out this morning when it tried out it's cock-a-doddle-do. It will be finding a...

Moved 9 1/2 week chicks to coop and run.

OK, this evening I "tried" rounding up the chickens to walk up the ladder to the coop. Ha, that was an exercise that should have been captured on video, chickens probably thought I was absolutely bonkers. I got one to go up the ladder, the others I had to "pick up" and put them in. Instead on...
