I have four RIR that are 10 weeks and one adult. It's going to be hard to tell them apart until I get to know their personalities. But the black feathers will help.
Yay! Thanks everyone!
I finally have all hens. Oh boy that's a lot of eggs when they all start laying. :D
My first attemp, I had four eggs. All four hatched. One chick was killed right away by another hen. Two of them turned out to be roosters that I got rid of.
2nd time I got six eggs. Only...
Instead of getting eggs when my hen went broody, I bought day old chicks. The feed store said they were 95% certain the chicks were female. (How can they make that claim at that age?).
I put them under my broody and she has been a wonderful mom.
(By the way, I would never have attempted this...
Thank you!! I'm really happy to hear the consensus on it being a pullet. I had 6 eggs and only one hatched so if this was a roo I would be very dissapointed.
Thank you. I will look for that book.
I agree that Spring would have been much better. I was surprised when Daisy went broody. I had just lost her only companion a few days before and was planning to buy another hen. But when she went broody I decided to get eggs instead. I'm glad at least one...
It's so disappointing, isn't it? I'm sorry about your eggs.
I had another broody, my current broody's mamma, that I gave 4 eggs to and all 4 hatched. That was my first time hatching. One chick was killed by another hen right away. I separated them after that. The other three survived but two...
Thats what I was thinking. But I wanted the opinion of more experienced chicken owners so I came here.
I was bummed that out of 6 eggs I only ended up with one chick. We had a heatwave and temps went over 100 so I'm not sure if that's what affected it. The lady I got my eggs from says her...
Well, maybe I'll just wait until she goes broody again. At least she got one chick and she is no longer alone.
I don't have a set up for chicks if she was to reject them.
Hi all,
I had a disappointing hatch.
I was down to one hen and she went broody. Perfect! I got six fertilized eggs and she did a great job sitting. During that time she kicked out two eggs and ate them. That left me with four. On day 21 one egg hatched. Cutest little guy. I waited and waited...
I know for sure the bigger one is. The crowing helped. :-D
But I wasn't sure about the smaller one. I'm starting to think it is a roo because he and the larger one sometimes go at it. But he hasn't crowed. What do you guys think?
I'm so sorry. I lost one of the baby chicks the day it was born. My other chicken attacked it. I have also lost three other chickens, two of them I believe were caught by raccoons. They were inside but raccoons are crafty. The other chicken, well, it just died. No idea why.
The ones lost to...
