We haven't done mailed eggs in a good while. My first go at that was abysmal. Then after i bought a real incubator and learned how to calibrate a humidity meter We usually got 8 or 9 eggs per dozen if the shipper sent good, fresh, fertile eggs. Hatching of our own eggs we usually do between 8...

    The Mississippi Chicken Whisperer

Don't ever let anyone tell you that chickens are not responsive to the voice and tones of their owners. My wife talks with our little flock of Black Copper Marans every day. It keeps them laying. Works really well through the winter and works some when the Mississippi heat slows 'em down. My...

Thanks for the reply Lynn. Right now I am trying to hatch a flock of Black Copper Marans. But I built a coop for my mom and picked her up some hens and a dominique roo from first Monday last summer. Unfortunately they wouldn't lay for her. So I am trying to hatch her a new flock of...

    2 1/2 week old FBCMs

I just noticed that the one I think is the cockerel is starting to get the copper colored feathers across its shoulders (its saddle?) Anyways, here's his (or at least I think its "HIS") first splotches of color: Laterz, Lew

ChocolateMouse made a believer out of me!

As my introduction to these forums I made a post called "First Hatching Disaster". In that thread I talked about the horrible way I received some eggs off ebay. The way they were packaged seemed to leave a lot to be desired: Consequently I only successfully hatched two chicks from 23 eggs...

    Easter Egger Hatching Eggs

Just wanted to let everyone know that if you're considering ordering these but are hesitant because of the perils of shipped eggs....go on and order! I have so far ordered eggs via mail three times. The first two times I received some broken eggs in the orders. This last time I ordered from...

    2 1/2 week old FBCMs

I have two chicks from an ebay hatch. One I think is a cockerel and the other a pullet but I am very inexperienced with this. Any opinions? I think this guy is a cockerel due to him feathering slower than the other and the size and color of his comb?: Thinking this is a pullet because of...

    First Hatching Disaster

Well, I think I have found at least one of my problems. I had tested my old school thermometer/hygrometer for temp calibration and it was spot on. However, I did not test the hygrometer. Since I was wanting to try a second hatch with three different kind of eggs I bee-bopped off to Walmart and...

    First Hatching Disaster

Followed your advice and went over to post on my state thread, thanks. The lid fits very well and sits onto weatherstripping to make it airtight. What little air space there is we use to adjust the humidity by covering the seams with duct tape. Lew

Just checking in from the uppermost north of Mississippi. Hello from Corinth. Just starting to experiment with incubating eggs and looking to have an egg laying flock by spring. So, if anyone within an hour of me is selling fertile eggs gimme a holler! Later, Lew
