Sorry to hear about your hen :-( You are brave doing an autopsy, I should have done that on the hen we lost a good while back. She was really skittish and sounded a huge alarm whenever another bird landed in the yard and she seemed to have died on the same spot she sounded the alarm each time...
I know it's yucky but you have to force the mouth open, not the most glamourous thing...but they do forgive you. Has this happened just recently to another chick? Could this be nothing to do with the fly?
Poor thing, she looks pretty sad :( But sounds like you have some strong possibilities of what it is and they are better than the unsolvable possibilities. Hope you are able to get it sorted without too much trouble.
Can I ask K R 2709, Is Corid the brand name or the active ingredient? I'm in Australia an don't seem to have a lot of these things available. However it might just be a different brand.
Hope it's nothing too bad Shellraiser!
Thanks Eggcessive! (for some reason I posted this right after you but it didn't work so here goes again!)
She (I think) is 11 weeks old. We have one adult and four other chicks. I have had a good look at the others eyes and none of them have any signs of issues, so hopefully I have isolated...
Hi,
I'm sorry to hear this, mine has a bad eye but is completely acting normal. Must be terrible to watch, I wish I had some advice but my only idea would be to make sure that you get some sort of food into the chick so that whatever was in they fly (if it is that) is diluted. That is how you...
Hi all,
Was very sad to see that the most friendly girl in our new set of chicks has a puffy eye! Thank you for all of the threads people have posted about this in the past. I have cleaned the eye out with eye irrigation liquid from our first aid kit. And following the advice on other threads...
G'day farmerkevin,
Sounds like you have a great community that can help you with scraps. I'm assuming they're getting protein in the feed you're buying?
The worms I'm breeding are high in protein and can be gut-loaded with things your chooks need like calcium if they appear to be lacking. If...
Hi,
Well so far I've had mine for about two months and I now have my first set of bettles. It's hard to know if they've been breeding and laying eggs because they are tiny and clear but I hope that in a month maybe I'll have hundreds of larvae (meal worms).
All they need is a dark place, some...
Hi Guys,
I've started breeding meal worms or darkling beetles in order to give my chooks some high protein and affordable food. I will let you know how I go, as I have just begun, but so far it has been very cheap to run.
I bought one pack of worms for 10 Aussie Dollars and so far I have 30...
Great! Well that sounds promising that we will hopefully get a couple of hens hopefully :-D thanks!
Can you tell me what you are looking at to make those predictions? That way I might be able watch them with a bit of knowledge :-D
