Raising Chocolate Eggers / Novogen Color Chocolate from Hillside Hatchery / Freedom Ranger Hatchery

Cool! I’m looking forward to see how dark the eggs are. I’d be curious to see how your extra cockerels end up filling out too.

Are those eggs from your back crosses or from your pure marans?

I agree. Since I learned that halos are an sop fault for marans, they’ve stuck out like a sore thumb to me haha.

Sorry I’m just now seeing your post. Those are super cool looking! Do you think they’ll all pass on brown egg genes since they don’t have a pea comb?

At what age would 25 CC become noticeable?

I raise my Cornish cross on a similar size lot and have no issues with noise or smells. They are super quiet. They only care about food. You can definitely use your shed to get them to 3 weeks old and then put them outside. I do 2 batches a year; one in May and one in August. Both outside with...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

Yep that’s the one. It kind of makes me want to raise bresse again.

Nice. Good luck with your hatch. It’ll be exciting to see how your olive eggers turn out. I watched a YouTube video of some chefs in London taste testing several breeds of chicken, and the marans was ranked nearly as high as the bresse.

I get what you mean. From what I’ve experienced it’s been about 7-8 months before my olives or marans start to lay, so that adds even more time.

That’s really interesting-it looks like Christy’s eggs inherited most of the minty color from the EE. Christy x Kong pullets would be way cool. I’d imagine you’d get a real nice dark green out of that? I forgot you had the Ayam Cemanis from your broody too. Too many possibilities haha

Cool! I’d love to see what colors they end up laying. I think everyone wants the really dark marans eggs (myself included). I haven’t seen anyone trying to sell back-crossed olives in my area, so eventually I want to get a good line going for that.

It’s a cross of a marans rooster and F1 olive egger pullet. The marans rooster came from a #4 or #5 shade red like the one I just posted, and the olive egger was a tractor supply pullet. I have 2 that hatched from this cross. One lays the cool speckled eggs and the other lays a really nice...

Nice! Do you plan on crossing your olive rooster to any marans? Or breeding back to your olive egger pullets?
