We've been getting some seriously hot weather, though not as hot as Seattle right now, and I tossed some frozen blueberries in the coop for the babies, and since they had so much fun, I tossed some in for my older layers too. Boy, small round things and chickens make for one heck of a laugh!!
I keep hay in the nest boxes too! and I regularly throw some hay and the weeds from the garden in the tractor for the meaties, roots and all. I come out the next day and there's nothing left! Plus, for me, the hay works as a sort of deep litter.
believe me NotTheMomma, you almost can't get ones that multiply well! These little mealies are one of nature's natural feed bugs, so they multiply like crazy.
By the way, anyone working on the giant mealworms? My large's are doing well, but the giants don't seem to be making any moves towards...

I've expressed my dismay about this list on poultryhelp.com before. The list is from a book on reptile keeping. That, in itself, is not a disqualification for information on plants toxic to chickens. Generally, a plant toxic to one animal is likely to be toxic to other animals...
haha funny raccoon story, reminds me of one that happened to me when I lived on the Sound.
We used to live in Everett and here's one thing I bet you don't know about Seattle and Everett; our weather in Everett is the direct inverse of Seattle's. Meaning if Seattle has rain, we're boiling in...
Think about it. Dried peas/beans swell up when they get into water, right? what happens in your chicken's stomuchs? They swell up there too. Fresh off the bush and you just get to be mad at them, but they will be happy to have gotten to the peas, so no worries
Since I feed the leftovers from dinner *no meat*, most of my babies eat everything. The older bantams don't like the commercial feed but love my MIL's white country gravy. Matter of fact, I've seen them turn up their beaks at most of the veggies *unless the veggies are all that's left* and go...
I have bought some mealworms from the Wormman before, and I had my great little setup, to make more mealworms. They came in just fine even not refrigerated. I was feeding bearded dragons, sugar gliders, and my cat loved them too. (yes, I know, weird cat!).
From what I know about them, check...
i am in love with these waterers. Took me about 6 bucks to make each one, since I had to buy the water jugs but I had the buckets already. An idea to make it cheaper is to check freecycle in your area to see if someone has some of these jugs.
We only did four holes around since ours are still...
So today I processed some cornish crosses and my 17 year old daughter, Jen, actually helped. She was so upset but once she realized what was actually happening to them (we've had two die in the last two days, apparently of heart attacks), she jumped right in to help. Tomorrow we have to do...
I raised meat rabbits for years,I was asked many times, how can you kill a cute rabbit?my reply was,I wouldn,t want to try to eat a live one, would you? gig
Too Funny!! Whoo!!
Can anyone tell me what is a better system of feeding? Troughs or full day access (just take it away at night)?
I feed mine 12 on/12 off, but this is my first batch. We're right on 7 weeks, and they weigh in at 4-6lbs each. (ooh, my daughter hates standing on the scale with the birds! ) We...

I will feast on tastey, healthy chicken and eggs and they will eat chemical and bacterial laden foods and natural selection will weed out this sector of the populace. Eventually, the only people left will be people who raise their own chickens for food.
The only problem with...

Try this one for the recipe. I used it last year, and made two batches. One with the clove, and another using maple extract instead of cloves. My soon-to-be inlaws are now asking when I am going to make more!
(Hint-make enough to freeze in batches, and definitely let it sit over night...
yeah, we have kids 'in town' (all two miles of town) that ask us what we do with our chickens. Then they look halfway interested in helping us and their parents are asking if we know how dangerous live poultry can be, and that we are going to get sick from raising then eating them!
These are...
