Dear Ashley ~ The ducklings were born in 2012, and are now big ducks living in Olympia, WA! Thanks for your interest, though. I would check Craig's List for ducklings that might be available near you. Good luck!
Thank you for this suggestion. I think Cinnamon is getting cabin fever in the box, so I think I'll try this tomorrow. She tends to be nervous and a little flighty to begin with, which gives me pause, but I think it's time to give her a little break from her new role!
All seven have now emerged and have been sighted. Cinnamon apparently has no idea that these aren't chickens! She's doing an excellent job. I don't know how long she will tolerate being in a box with her brood. Anyone have any experience with a similar situation? Advice is welcome! I plan to...
Cinnamon is a Supermom! So far, I've counted six ducklings, and hope to spot all seven at once sometime today. They scamper under their mama when I approach the box, so when they are more accustomed to me I hope to count all 7.
Hi all ~ Cinnamon had all the babies well tucked under her yesterday, and I am away from home today. Check back tomorrow, when I'll have the whole day to observe and snap pix!
(Update: After 4 days, mama and 7 ducklings are thriving! See the video below :-))
Cinnamon, my broody Welsummer, finally has some fulfillment: I placed 7 Khaki Campbell eggs under her 27 days ago and now she is expecting the 7th duckling to emerge any time. I transferred Surrogate Cinnamon...
Hi Cheet,
Last year I ended up trimming Vita's comb because it was becoming discolored & I feared infection and/or pecking by the other hens. I "chickened out" the first time I held her firmly in my lap. It was very intimidating. But, I got up the courage and with my sharpest sheers, snipped the...
Yes, this is an old original post, but for those still wondering about Welsummers and their broodiness: YES, my one Welsummer has had three long broody spells during the late spring and summer. She's a year old. Because I have no rooster, and therefore won't be needing a broody hen, her...
Your situation sounds tough. It would be hard to "off" one of your hand-raised birds. One of my three hens is a Welsummer, and according to the breeder I bought her from, the Welsummer roosters are especially nasty. He's had to kill several or risk having serious beak wounds to his calves (he...

As for the speckled sussex being mixed, I raised my first pullets this year, and that is how mine looked until their adult feathers came in. I was pretty sure they were some kinda partridge mixed with speckled something, and now they are beautiful picture perfect girls. Not sure...

Hi! About crushing flax seed for the chix: mine is already ground, and the oil would be more readily available to the digestion. Grinding a little with a mortar and pestle would work, if you have that. It's tough stuff! This is what is added to the commercial "High Omega 3" egg layers...
Also reporting in here from north Seattle (Shoreline), where it was 18 degrees when I got up at 7. My three girls are staying up in the loft of their little tractor, with a 125 watt brooder lamp. They LOVE the warm oatmeal with raisins and flax seed for extra oil & fiber. I also put some grit...
