I tried to let my first time mom a black maran hatch fertile eggs since she'd been broody for 2 plus weeks too, and the first egg that pipped freaked her out also. She left the nest for a couple of hours but since it was in the 90s I wasn't worried about it getting cold. She eventually went back...
Do you have a picture of the chick in egg? Yesterday morning I had one bantam stuck in egg with just a quarter size cm yellow membrane opening, could hear it peeping loudly so knew it had tried to zip for awhile, the other 4 had been out for awhile. I wondered if it had also rolled around to the...
Any luck? If he pipped over 24 hours ago most of the veins should be absorbed by now. I usually just unstick the head and let it push it's way out by using its legs.
Have you read about dry hatching? Plenty of articles and learning on this page regarding the practice. My worst hatch rates were in styrofoam incubators where the humidity climbed to almost 100 after adding water at hatch time and I lost a lot of chicks fully formed in the egg like you...
Thanks everyone. I treated them all with straight drops of Corrid to the beaks then in their water for 5 days. No one else has died so far. Now I know even chicks I hatch and those never being outside before can get coccidiosis too.
Feeding Sprout chick starter from Fleet Farm, introduced chick grit to the older chicks but not the younger ones yet. Only snacks so far has been watermelon and meal worms crushed up. I'm at the bottom of a 50 lb bag but it doesn't smell any different from when it was first opened. I have 2 red...
My husband built our brooder from brand new wood. Currently have 3 sections with 4 week olds in one, 3 week olds in one and 2 week olds in the baby side. Five of the older 4-week olds are d'Uccle I got from MPC as day olds, the rest I've hatched from various different breeders on eBay and...
He's gorgeous, those greens and purple! I have a Sumatra pullet but she's only 8 weeks and not showing any other colors beside blacks. Wish she was friendly, probably the most skittish of all my chicks her age. Sorry, can't have roosters.
