I'm currently thinking about getting into raising ornamental birds as a hobby, and am surprised at how pricey pheasants can be, even the unsexed and non-breed specific chicks at commercial hatcheries. Most of them also, for everything I've read and seen, seem to be fairly easy to raise. They're...
Dorking, faverolle, houden, and sultans all have five toes other than silkies. Silkies will have black skin, others (to my knowledge) will not.
"Easter Eggers" are going to be either Araucana or Ameraucana chickens. I don't believe they have five toes, and they do come in a bantam variety.
I have broody silkies right now. I pick them up and move them daily, and they go right back to the eggs- I'm hatching out babies now. I've even moved the eggs to new nest locations several times. I have more trouble getting them to not be broody. However, silkies are known for being awesome...
I want to mention that these were not silkie eggs.
They were guinea eggs.
I hatched "chicks" out from under my girls this morning. Yeah... half of them were keets. >>;;;
Same size, same color as silkie eggs... only dimpled.
I'm not sure on chickens, but my duck will lay multiple eggs in a day. I'll be sure to pick up all the eggs in the afternoon, and the next afternoon there will sometimes be up to four new eggs. Pretty bizarre. She seems happy and the eggs are tough, though, so I don't worry on it.
I've been getting eggs like this for the past couple of weeks. There are thousands of tiny pigmented indentations all over the shell, and when I clean the eggs, they shed their tint very readily. The eggs look fine on the inside, and seem fairly hard. Some sort of calcium deficiency or a...
My ancona duck has been brooding eggs behind my back.
Well, sort of. I knew she had a couple of eggs, but she rarely seem to sit on them and they were barely ever warm when I checked them, not to mention dark. I figured, hey, it's the middle of winter and she's cooped up- let her have...
I personally would go with either ancona, cayuga, or muscovey ducks. Ancona ducks lay well and are more even-tempered than Runners, but muscoveys are extremely docile. Cayuga ducks are simply gorgeous, and don't seem to have bad attitudes, either.
I personally have three ducks (1 ancona, 2 cayuga) and 14 silkie chickens housed in the same coop. The ducks are very, very messy, but I still enjoy them. They have some pretty funny personalities. I use a deep litter system to keep some heat in for the freezing northern Missouri winters, and...
As the title suggests, I live in Northern Missouri. I only recently got into poultry, and have definitely caught the poultry bug! I have (counting new chicks) 15 bantam silkies- 2 black, 6 buff/partridge (they're young), 3 blue, 3 white, and 1 splash. I also am fond of ducks, boasting 2 cayuga...
