What is wrong with this chicken?

Thanks for the responses! We've been worried about her! What would you suggest to add to the layer pellets for more protein?

What is wrong with this chicken?

She is one of eight Rhode Island Reds and is the only one that looks like this. She is about 1 1/2 years old and the whole lot seem to get along fine. No pecking each other. They are free ranged most days and locked up at night.

Do These chicks look almost 5 weeks old?

Quote: I bet they were 3 DAYS old when you got them on 4/10. Mine are 5 weeks and they look much more like preppyhippychicks.

    2 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 12 Lb, 30Lb, What size??

We are getting ready to order our feeder and waterer for the new coop. I'm just not sure what size to get since this is our first go around. We will have 9 RIR hens and want to hang them. Is it possible to get the bigger of the sizes and not have to mess with it every day? Are there...

Quote: Pat, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to look at this and post. We love your idea and have been working on it over the weekend. It is going to take us a while longer to get it all together, but when we finish I'll post new pictures. CityChook - DH is working on the...

    Newbie needs help finishing coop...

Thanks so much for helping! Keep 'em coming. I was worried about them not having a true shelter area. I think we need to work on that. I plan on taking the brooder box out there in a week or two and leave it until they settle in. They are 4 weeks now and in the garage. Temps this week are...

    Newbie needs help finishing coop...

This is what my husband has built so far. I know he is thinking what he built inside will be the nesting boxes. Do they need an indoor sleeping area also if we live in SC? We will have 9 RIR hens if all goes well! Please help this newbie finish the coop. Thanks!!

Help! Can only find 17% starter

We have two feed stores and both sell 17% protein chick starters. The starter I received from McMurrary is 22% and is all but gone. Babies are two weeks old now. Is 17% all right or do I need to pay the outragious shipping fees at McMurray and order more from them?

Chick grit? Treats for 1 weeks?

My children feed our 2 week olds some live crickets this weekend. Bad idea? They are on starter crumble and I add sprinklings of baby grit that I got from McMurrary with the crumble.

When is it obvious you've got a rooster?

I am very new at this, but we ordered 20 pullets and 4 roos (RIR). I have 4 chicks without tail feathers at 2 weeks and those four also have lighter colored wings. They are also the ones who like to climb on top of the waterer. I think those are my roos. The biggest clue being no tail...

    Wire Brooder Floor?

Quote: That is exactly what they did! They had a ball doing it anyway. I do think I'll stay with this setup though. They really seem to like the shavings and we'll just pickup the board and wire to clean it all out. Thanks eveyone for your help. I'll post a picture after we get it all...

    Wire Brooder Floor?

Thanks for the replies. I am anything but a country girl, but my hubbie decided we needed chicks! I am of course falling for them like I suppose he knew I would! We've got 20 RIR chicks that are one week old (half will go to a friend) . We had them on newspaper too long in a smallish box...

    Wire Brooder Floor?

I'm brand new to the world of chickens. It seems to me it would be so nice and easy to have chicks on a wire floor. Clean up would be a breaze. I saw one brooder in the sticky with that type of design. Is it safe for the chicks? Do they need the shaving most brooders have?
