I bought 4 pullet chicks from our local feed store on June 3. I wanted only 3 but after reading about sexing inaccuracy and the misfortunes that can befall baby chicks I got 4 just in case. They were shipped to the store from Cackle hatchery. I think they were probably hatched out around June 1...
Welcome to my homepage. I am from Indiana, have 2 grown--well almost--boys--in college, 2 dogs--3 mini dachshunds and a Chinese crested and 4 new EE chicks.
I was mulching my garden by laying down newspapers and in the batch of newspapers was an old copy of Mother Earth News. I sat down for a...
First of all let me say that I had absolutely no construction experience whatsoever. Now that was a big drawback, but actually since I didn't know what I was getting into I went ahead and took the plunge to build a chicken coop. This coop is quite small at 3 x 3 feet by about 4 feet tall--but...
I have 2 coops and they are about 5 feet from our large woods but the chicken yard itself is a fenced area 30 x30 with a corner that includes some of the woods--they love to go under the trees and small woody shrubs and hang out--that is where they dig holes, dust bathe etc, so the rest of the...
That is just a wonderful coop and run! Thanks so much for posting the pictures from start to finish--I am sure it will help someone with their plans. Be sure to submit it to coop designs so I can find it when I build my next coop
I use pine shavings on the coop floor and used to put it in the nest boxes, but switched one box to straw to see if they liked it and that was the box they always used, so both nests are now straw lined. They seem to like to rearrange the straw and it does make nice bowl shaped nests.
I have only one Welsummer and she is a hatchery bird that I got as a 12 week old. She is beautiful and lays lovely dark eggs but is absolutely wild and no amount of treats or petting has changed her.
This is from our local Craigslist today:
"I have 25 or so laying hens for sale. I am currently letting them free range, so we may have to catch them after they go to roost. They are 1 year old and currently laying. I have barred rocks and ocelots, a few Rhode Island reds."
I have never seen an...
I used pine shavings for over a year, but had an extra bale of straw left from seeding my lawn and so I tried that in the nest box and they really seem to prefer it over the shavings---they really get in there and make themselves a nice cozy nest out of it and so far no problems at all with...
Patience is the key. Nature will take its course and chickens will lay eggs when their bodies are ready. My beautiful blue Ameraucana produced her first egg last week. She is 46 weeks old.
Hmmm. I just looked at the Welp hatchery site and what Rural King listed as California Grays are actually California Whites.

I was just at the Rural King this morning and they have a bin full of day old pullet chicks. They are all yellow with black spots. I can't seem to find a picture of an adult hen--anyone have one??
