    Maple syrup 2016

I started with 2 taps Sunday morning to see what would happen. Nothing yet. When I get the first drip, I will be tapping the rest. This is only my second year and last year the sugar bug bit me. Got 1.25 gallons of finished syrup from 4 taps. 65 gals of sap. This year I hope to add more.

    Minnesota!

I did express her crop a few times and she was on plain organic yogurt and acv/water for about 5 days. She is also isolated in the warm basement in a cozy 4x4 crate. she was seeming to be doing a little better , so I started introducing wet oatmeal and warm wet mash a little at a time. I was...

    Minnesota!

I'm in need of an opinion here. One of my girls has sour crop. It's been a few weeks now and she was doing better for a while, but it seems to be getting worse again. I fear I am going to need to releave her of her suffering. So, I was wondering if the meat is affected by crop issues. I can not...

    Pressurized Wood

Yes, always make sure they are for the taking. I work for a local trucking company and if I need pallets and see a bunch somewhere I'll ask and come back after work and help clean up for them. I would say 95% of the time they are happy to get rid of them.

    Pressurized Wood

Pallets are a great way to go for making compost bins. I made mine years ago and they are holding up great. I would suggest trying to use oak pallets. They will last a few years longer than pine. You can always find free pallets behind businesses in industrial areas and warehouses. SO many uses...

    Minnesota!

I have 8 different breeds in my little suburban flock and I have had neighbors ask about my silkies if they were even chickens. They're cute as heck and very mild tempered and sweet. I think quieter than the rest too. Of course they all will make some noise.

    Overfeeding?

We had a case of worms which caused the chickens to eat a LOT more. Maybe deworm them, can't hurt. Some even say to do it periodically just to prevent worms.

    Minnesota!

I had great luck finding my chickens from a trusted person here, Thanks Minniechickmama, so, now I'm looking for a friend who is interested in raising chickens. He is looking for around 10-12 and I think he would like them to be close to laying age, if not laying now. Not sure what breeds he...

Noob question regarding treats and grit...

I gave my first batch of chicks, last year, some small 'chick' grit. And this year I just gave my new chicks the big girls grit starting at a few weeks old. They are now 4 months old and did fine with regular grit. So I wouldn't get special chick size grit. I agree to toss some regular stuff in...

    Overfeeding?

Sometimes my girls will get really messy while eating and spill or "flick" out a ton of pellets onto the floor and it gets buried under their bedding and I can't see it. When I do I will leave the feeder empty for a day so they clean up. But, at that age they will eat a lot and fill out fast...
