I did speak to a vet (she was not able to see the bird directly), but from pictures it appeared to her to be a wound from an attack of some type. Considering nothing has access to the chickens except themselves, it is possible she was pecked I guess... her recommendation was to clean the wound...
I did not detect a foul smell, but I also did not stick my face super close. I will scrape some of what looks like a scab for the presence of pus. What would I be looking for one way or another in her beak and tongue? Her tongue looked fine other than being pushed to the other side of her mouth...
Oldest girl (8 years) in the coop had this pop up in the past few days. Abscess is firm to the touch.
Doesn't seem respiratory, nostrils do not have discharge. Color is very odd. Canker? There is none of the yellow "cheese" like stuff in her mouth though.
Or just an injury? Tumor? Something...
Thank you both - I have been going back and forth between rooster damage or plain feather picking/eating. Both seemed equally plausible to the point of going either way. I feed them sufficient meal worm snacks so I don't think they are protein deficient to that extent. Their layer feed is good...
I have had an issue going on in the flock for several months now where some of the younger hens are missing a tremendous amount of feathers on their saddle area and some on the wing stubs. See pictures. That is Blu Kote applied since it is bare skin.
There are 14 hens
We have a single 1 year...
Went to close the flock up tonight and one Orpington was not in with the rest (never happens). She was crouched with her head at a weird angle. She got up and walked over to the coop ramp slowly but could not make it up. She kept angling her head far to one side or the other or even backwards...
~4 weeks old - We have Silver Laced Wyandottes in this order but none look remotely close to the color pattern as this, and the others have yellow legs, these are dark.
Any ideas? He/she is very pretty.
Can get better picture if it helps.
