    question about bourbons and bronze

I did bronze (mostly bronze) toms that were about a 1 1/2 for Thanksgiving. They both dressed out around 16 pounds. Also just bought a bourbon red jake who is about the same age as a bronze jake I have and he is significantly larger. I haven't processed any hens yet.

    Adding light for earlier laying

Last year, my hens did not start to lay until June. I had them penned up with a small outdoor run through Spring hunting season. That may have had something to do with the late clutches, but I want to make sure they start laying in March or April this year. I'm not going to pen them up this...

    Fall Turkey Breeding?

Does anyone know if or how turkeys can breed in late summer or fall? I got my first turkeys last July and the hen started laying right away and I wound up with a Labor Day weekend hatch. This year the clutches hatched in June. However, I just lost about 90% (about 10 birds) of my poults to...

    Turkenstein25's Turkey Talk for 2015

My turkeys have not begun to lay yet. Do some breeds lay only in Summer? I got a hen and tom last year in July. The second day I had them, the hen started laying in the coop, then ran off and layed somewhere in the woods. She came back around Labor Day with poults. Not sure their breeds...

    Name the Turkeys!!!

Wow. Ocellated turkeys are about the coolest thing I've seen since Ghostbusters. Now the question is, can a peacock breed with a turkey hen and have viable rainbow patterned offspring?

    Selling Turkey Feathers

Do any of you sell turkey feathers? I started collecting decent looking ones and sold a box of a couple hundred for $10 a couple months ago. I was just reading up on incubating eggs on this Porter fella's website and noticed he is selling feathers for like $10 a piece for the big ones...

    Coop door height off ground

I'm about to cut a door in my turkey coop so they can start free ranging again if the temperature ever gets above freezing again. I'm considering cutting the door about 2 feet off the ground to keep coyotes out of the coop if I forget to close the door at night. It seems like most people have...

    Broody Turkeys

Quote: Where do you store the eggs you plan to put back under the hen? Do you keep them in an incubator so they start developing, or in the fridge so they don't develop too fast or just at room temperature in the house? I'm thinking about doing the same thing once mine start laying. I would...

    Turkenstein25's Turkey Talk for 2015

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't think turkeys would start laying this early. Weekend project is now making nesting boxes and getting some fresh hay for the ladies.

    Turkey Hunting Season

Turkey hunting is a pretty big thing in my area and my turkeys are colored pretty similar to the wild turkeys. Do they make blaze orange turkey collars or something that I can put on my birds so hunters know my birds are domestic when they wander around the woods? Dunno if ankle zip ties would...

    Vermicomposting

gardenweb.com has an extensive vermicomposting forum. I've had an indoor wormbin for fridge garbage for a few years. It's pretty low maintenance. You can do outdoor setups too for manure. If you get into wormin' you are likely to get too attached to your herd to feed them to the chickens though.

    Turkenstein25's Turkey Talk for 2015

I found a tom and hen on craigslist last summer and picked them up. Guy told me they were Red Bourbon crosses, but after looking into it, I think Tom is (was) a Spanish Black and Eileen is a Slate. They got it on, and Eileen took off for about a month. Around Labor Day she came back with 7...

    Turkey Question!

I think Cknoodles answered the question I was for an anwer to, but want to double check. Is it ok to breed related turkeys? I picked up a pair of red bourbon "cross" turkeys this summer and to my suprise, the hen wandered off into the woods, then came back about a month later with 7 poults in...

    Angel Wing

Is angel wing necessarily a bad thing for birds raised for food to have? I friend mentioned it to me after I told him I have been giving my free range muscovy ducks crackers to get them used to being around me. I don't want them to migrate in the winter and plan to put the ones I don't eat in...
