    Cats and Chickens

My last flock was pretty laid-back about the cats, and they interacted in a very friendly way--cats were curious, but the chickens were much more bird than they were interested in (and one of the cats has been known to stalk a wild turkey or two). The new flock, however, is wary of the felines...

Keeping chicks in cool basement with a heat lamp?

Hi! I don't know where you are located, but I'm in NH and am doing the same thing. This is our second brood and they're doing great! We do have the benefit of a window and I keep that open to allow for circulation. The only thing I think might have an impact is dampness. Is your basement at...

Introducing ONE hen to existing flock...

I've had two other unsuccessful attempts. Both girls were great with people, one was a "found" chicken, and the other was the lowest in the pecking order. My flock seems to be a bit atypical, however, (which is why I didn't include the other times) in their lack of willingness to accept back...

    Keep the rooster?

My personal experience has been that he is incredibly watchful and has consistently put aside his own needs in the place of theirs. We've had two hawk attacks while we were home (and a couple when we weren't), and he's ushered them to safety. I've also observed him keeping close tabs on any...

Introducing ONE hen to existing flock...

I've been in the same spot. The one time I was successful was when I re-introduced the hen at night. Everyone was roosting and we just set her on the roost. There was some jostling for about a week, but no one was hurt. Good luck! -C

    Keep the rooster?

Hi- I'm rotating out my old flock and raising a new one. My current rooster and I have an understanding, we 'get' each other (esp. when I have the leaf rake ) and he's nice to the girls. My question is, should I keep him rather than ordering another roo with the new group? He'll have to be...

Dog caught young wild turkey poult...help!

dhunicorn- thank you so much for the advice! It made me realize that wildlife trauma is more than I am equipped to handle, so I called the vet and was referred to a somewhat local (Henniker) lady who "knows a lot about turkeys". I called her, brought the chick to her (she confirmed that it had...

Dog caught young wild turkey poult...help!

I haven't wanted to examine him too closely, but his right wing seems to be a little bare. Currently he's sitting up in a cat carrier I use to transport birds. I've got the other half of the quail pen outside which is empty and could put him there. Should I fill with hay or leave the mesh...

Dog caught young wild turkey poult...help!

While out for a walk in the front yard with my 2 dogs, we came across a flock of turkeys and poults. One chased after them and somehow managed to get a young (three weeks or so) poult. I got it away from him, but it could not run or fly far, so I picked it up. I'm concerned about internal...

Chicken swap Milford TSC June 21st (new date)

First, I'm SO thankful these swaps are around! MANY thanks to the organizers! Second, I just want to 'test the waters' here to see how likely it is that I will be able to GIVE AWAY my three six-week-old roosters (easy to handle, they've only been hand raised) . They were hatched to check...

    Hens Missing Toe Nail?

I have a hen who is missing that same tonail/tip of her toe. We found her in a blizzard in Feb., and I'm unsure how long she'd been out in it. She had a couple black toenails as a result, and I think she lost it to frostbite. Maybe she got frostbite? -C

    Experimenting. What did I get?

So, I was curious in general and hatched out 8 of my red star eggs. Yes, chicks resulting from a combination of red star hens and a red star rooster. Does anyone have experience with this combination? 6 or the chicks are basic, run-of-the-mill yellow chickens, one is a light buff orange, and...
