I had the same problem when I tried to integrate younger birds with older ones who wouldn't play well together. I think the younger ones felt safer in the nesting box. I ended up putting a mesh across the entrance at night and would put the Reds on the roosting bar where I wanted them. It...
Here are pictures of my first chicks, white leghorns, and Thumper (the big chicken).
A bobcat managed to pull all the chicks through the fence and killed them. This was a very sad day. They were 39 days old and I had put them out in the big run (in their smaller pen) less then a week earlier...

I have 9-wk old chicks and I am about to put them int the "big coop" tomorrow. I am going to be getting more baby chicks again and will keep them in my little brooder baby chick coop for at least a couple months before integrating them. The process I have done before is to put the...

I agree, don't integrate them immediately. Keep them completely separate. They have a totally different set of immune systems, bacteria, etc. Don't integreate them for at least a month unless you are absolutely certain they have not been sick. Then when ready to integrate, put them...

I have been thinking hard about whether I need to cull my 3 egg layers. First one got sick (wheezing, sneezing, labored breathing, poor oral intake and little lethargy, no egg laying for a month). She was much better by the next day and the 2nd chicken started getting sick the same...

Thanks for the advice. I asked my husband what hardware cloth was and he called it hardwire cloth, and told me the same thing about how it was made. I would be amazed if a dog could get through the dog run fencing, but then again, I was amazed at some creature getting to my little...
Today I noticed a big change in her: wheezing, labored breathing, water white diahrrea, very quiet, not eating and drinking much, not clucking normally. I separated her from the other one until I saw she was starting to wheeze too. After a great deal of research I am pretty sure I am dealing...
