As a follow-up to my original post, I've found an almost perfect bedding material that I've been using for the past two years....Rice hulls. Just in case it's not obvious by the name, rice hulls are the outside hull (or husk) of a piece of rice....a byproduct of the rice industry. It is small...
Hello,
Can any standard Houdan owners out there share your experiences with the breed? Are there any health issues the breed is prone to? And what about their personalities? Are they friendly/shy, calm/flighty, quiet/loud, good layers or bad?
I love the look of the breed but am having...
My potential new mom is a 14 month old bantam Araucana (A full-breed)...This is the second time she's gone broody, which is pretty unusual at such a young age . But. Last time she sat on an empty nest for an entire month, so I think she'd be a good mom. But... she's a pretty wild one, so not...

SpeckeledHen, I had read that too, regarding moms providing chicks with some immunity. I hope that's the case, but still want to be proactive just in case!
LEMURCHASER: Thanks SO much for all of your research (and your math skills, which are clearly better than mine!!!)
This is great information! I'm also so glad that Kathyinmo's post made me realize that I had miscalculated when I originally bought the Corid (almost a year ago), and that I had...
Lemurchaser, I hadn't seen your post when I submitted my last post. What you're saying makes sense.
FYI, my chicks are not on ground, but they are with their mom who presumably has/had coccidia. She was one of my only chickens that never showed symptoms and was never affected by it, but I...
