Thanks for the replies. I have only 3 chickens that use the coop and I have three roosting shelves and four nesting boxes. there is plenty of room. I think it may be the heat. Tonight is cool so I will check on her again. I let them free range during the day. I live in Nevada so it is sage...
I have a two year old Rhode Island Red who all of a sudden started roosting high on a branch of a shrub instead of going into the coop to roost at night.
Twice I took her down and placed her in the shed but she continues to stay outside at night.
What do you think? Should I just leave her...
I am having trouble with molting hens and decrease in egg production. My hens are around 18 months. I have two americaunas who have been losing neck feathers for the last 6 months! The other hens are a mix I cannot remember and are not molting. Out of these 5 hens I am getting one to three...
I have two Americana's. They are 10 months old. One of them is losing feathers on her neck. It does not look like pecking from other birds. No bleeding or open skin. Is this normal? When do they start molting?
Thanks for your time.

Thanks big E. I have learned from this I think. I did notice changes in this hen awhile ago but I did not know what to do and I hoped she would come out of it. She did lose a lot of weight and I believe from what I read on this web site, it was caused by a intestinal fungus and the...
well it is too late. She just died. I feel so bad that I didn't do something sooner. I need to not let this happen again. I did notice she was losing weight a while ago. She would roost earlier in the evenings. She did have some poop stuck to her feathers and I would just clean it off. All...
Help me too! I have a lethargic chicken too! I noticed a change in behavior about a week ago. she had stool stuck to her around her vent. I cleaned it off. She looks like she lost weight and now won't eat. I separated her from the rest. She is about 9 months old.
I wouldn't know about how...
I lost my first group of chickens to hawks last Christmas. I was away for the weekend.
The hawks entered the outside coop through the top and chased the chickens into the roosting area inside the chicken house. It was a feathery mess in there. I was so devastated. I found the chicken...
My Americauna also has a cross beak. I will take a pic next time I trim her beak. I have trimmed the bottom beak and she bled like crazy! I was so upset. Someone on this site helped me understand what to do the next time. Her top beak was curled in a great deal keeping her lower beak from...
Thanks for your reply. I worry about my girls! I kept her away from the others until she stopped bleeding and then put her back on her roost. She is fine this morning and the others don't seem to be picking on her. She ate some blueberries!
Her beak is still not perfect but she is eating...
Help I was told I could trim my Americana's crossed beak. today I trimmed it for the second time and it started to bleed a lot. What should I do? I don't want her to go back with the rest of the chicks while she is bleeding. Oh my what did I do?
It was just a little trim.

Thanks
I am still trying to figure out what is best for me. I clean and put new shavings down in the indoor coop ever 3 to 5 days. The shavings do make the poop drier so it can be swept out. the floor of the indoor coop is wood and I have to scrape it too! IN the roosting beds the...
