Sorry to hear about your loss.
We too lost an Australorp last year. She was about 6 months old. They were locked safely in the barn, or so I thought. She literally vanished. I found 1-2 feathers, but no sign of struggle. We suspect bobcat, who would powerful and stealthy enough to have pulled...
Been a while since I posted here. Hope Y'all are well.
Tragedy (and coyotes) struck a couple years ago, taking a couple of our small flock of 5 (Orangina 1 and Orangina 2).
Then we lost our old-timer (Easter) and Gorgeous (a beautiful campine) to sickness, leaving just 1--Shaggy--also a...
You're right--trap and disposal might be the only way. Seems like you can get them to vacate a structure, but they're reluctant to move completely out of the area. Good luck with your traps.
In my college days on a road trip near Santa Barbara, my friend spotted a rattlesnake on the side of the road, we stopped, put it in a cardboard box which we put in the floorboard, with my foot on it, for the remainder of our trip--2-3 hours. What was I thinking? We also heard about an...
They're back! Evicted from the barn two days ago, now spotted them roaming around the house tonight. I chased them off, into the fields as far as I could, checked for any holes, found none. Going on vacation tomorrow for a week--I fear the worst upon my return :-(
Great story, Mary. You were brave! I was told the young ones couldn't spray, but that was proved untrue in my case--so yes I think you did get lucky--maybe the skunk sensed your good intentions! Cheers.
Thanks for the tip. I did underestimate things for sure--amazing the critters you don't even see--snakes and skunks for example--until there's a reason for them to come out. Last year it was snakes, who killed one chick (just suffocated it, then spat it out because it was too big to swallow)...
Thought this might be useful/amusing for other members regarding our recent victory (fingers crossed) over a skunk family.
Lost one pullet last spring to what we thought was a skunk (judging by smell). Coop is inside the barn, and they run free outside during the day. We had one that always...
