    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

Its an easter egger miracle!! After 4 weeks of broken eggs since I started this post, our Auracana is laying strong healthy eggs! Apparently keeping it in does help alot (however it does sneakily get out every once in a while) Thanks heaps everyone!

    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

Thats a great Idea. We Normally feed the eggs back, however sometimes they end up in the compost. I remember we need to crush them, as otherwise they break the real eggs. Unfortunately we only have 1 properly laying chicken, the white bantam, so I may have to resort to oyster shells. Thanks though.

    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

We normally let them free range for a few hours on our property a day, however we have been a lot stricter due to the new laying season and them laying in awkward places (we have git them laying in their nesting boxes now though) We will keep them in their coop without scraps for a week and see...

    What is this breed?

I know I'm extremely late, but thats absolutely an Austrolorp (Australian Orpington cross) I've wanted one for ages and they're great layers. I also live in Nz and have been looking at some at http://www.featheredfriends.nz/

Dog attack, pulled feathers and raw neck

Im sorry I do not want to venture into this too far and say something that might do the wrong thing. All I can say is that your chickens are looking alright. We have only had two conditions when the chickens have been so to say in one piece. Both times the chickens have still been mauled and we...

    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

The calcium and protein percent is in the pictures below. We feed them most of our scraps. (of-course nothing inedible, like chickens, nightshade family, Potato skins etc...) Sorry I could not take photos before as it was night, however:

Oh I was just about to post something different, however that chicken looks like she has a good chance. Definitely visit the local vet (they probably know more than we do) to at-least give her painkillers. We have had all our chickens killed by dogs (about 20) and this looks like she looks like...

she should be getting enough calcium, as I said to aart, I am trying to get oyster shells as soon as I can, however, I'm guessing as she is the only one, it is probably not calcium related.

    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

Sorry didnt see your second post, I actually joined because of this problem. Anyway we live in New Zealand North Island. We are lower hemisphere, so we are nearing the end of winter, and starting our new laying season. We have only had 3 or 4 light frosts this entire winter.

    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

My chickens are on a mash feed with proper calcium levels and none other have gotten broken eggs so far. Our Auracana occasionally flys over the net for a few hours. I was trying to get oyster shells, but there are not supplied out here where we live, and thought if no other chickens had this...

    Auracan Laying Broken Eggs

My Auracana has been in our flock of four, for about 3 years. It is possibly inbred (it is hard to find the Auracana breed where I live) and is laying eggs broken on contact. The shell is soft and very smooth but broken on contact. I am fairly sure that the eggs are not broken by the others as...
