    Sand in the coop

    I attached a large kitty litter scoop to the end of a broomstick to sift out the waste. My kids call it the "Cooper Scooper".

    I agree with the above post. The leaves might be nice at first, but when they are gone and there is nothing but dirt it's time to bring in the sand. Sand offers great drainage, and it is so easy to keep the run clean.

    I also use the 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth. It's better to be safe than sorry.

    After the birds are safely in the coop for the night, set a baited rat trap. Of course, make sure it is not set when you let them out in the morning.
