Wow! That's encouraging to hear. I hope my girl is that good. My best moms have mostly been mixed breeds... but I did used to have a Turkish naked neck that was a good mom... I lost her last year, she was 7 years old! Brooded a clutch an died only a week or so after she cut them loose at 7 weeks.
That's another thing... I seldom have such a young hen go broody and stay committed to brood after going into the brooder coop... I usually break them of being broody when I get them in the brooder coop. She's a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte and have been told by friends that have them that they are...
She shouldn't be high in the pecking order as she is only 13 months old.... she is a pure breed, one of only a few I have here, but I doubt the other chickens know that (LOL). I think she is one of the prettiest but certainly not the one with the most personality.... I am totally confused by it...
I have a broody hen sitting on eggs due to hatch in less than a week. She is in a separate coop that shares a wall with the main coop so she can still see/hear the rest of the chickens and vice versa. My chickens all free range 10 acres, except when the girls are brooding eggs (by their chooce...
I too love all animals and do all I can to allow all creatures to live their lives. I too have seen a possum attacking my adult chickens.... found the breech location and fixed it. My chickens free range from sun up to sundown and to be a responsible chicken parent, I make sure to count the...
My chickens are true free range so I don't have a run. The chickens are really only in the coop at night and to lay their eggs. The door is opened in the morning and closed at sundown, after everyone is roosted for the night. The coop has a dirt floor. I layered the gravel and sand. I put down...
Update
So I cleaned out my coop, let dry for 2 days, then put in sand on top of gravel. I did this 2 weeks ago. Since then we have gotten another 6 or more inches of rain (4 inches in 3 days this week). The coop stayed dry!!!!! Thank you all for your help!!!
Update #2
We had another 4 inches of rain in 3 days. I am thrilled to report the coop stayed dry (that is if you don't count the chickens shaking off the water after getting caught in the rain). The sand was wet when I put it in because there was no dry sand to be found but it too is drying...
Update... rain has slowed significantly. I cleaned out the coop, down to the clay, let it dry 48 hours. I put down landscaping/ garden fabric then a layer of gravel then another layer of landscaping/ garden fabric then 4 inches of construction grade sand. The sand was still damp when I put...
Your place looks like mine. Normally drainage is fine but the ground is so saturated the water has no place to go. I have drainage ditches all around the coop and have for years. I guess I will just have to wait for dry weather. Thank you for your response. I am just frantic to help my little...
