    Babies going out!!!

I think it varies with each person really. We just hatched 3 silkies and a porcelain d'uccle. They stayed in two large dog crates with their moms for 2 weeks. After that, I let the doors open up to the main coop area which has a sort of tunnel out to the main run. The moms would keep the...

    Help me design my run!

How good at scavenging are you? Search free lumber in the local ad's, CL, Ebay, Marketplace, etc... If you can find pressure treated you can use 4x4's at whatever length to make a base and build up. You can skirt that with whatever fence and cover with tires for planting herbs. The upright...

    Broody

If you do this... be prepared for that bowel movement.. You will likely rethink your process once a broody relieves indoors.

    Help with "Nest" Relocation

If that chicken in the photo's is going to the area you do NOT want them, then I would say you need block that off. I would line that whole area with nesting boxes with curtains, and get two for the price of one... No eggs in weird places and you get extra nesting boxes. To be fair, I have...

    Silkie question

ok, so tossing the partridge into the bundle as a freebie then. I want as many options as possible from one rooster in that pen. well two but the other is a little old man that is just a freeloader in retirement now. Thanks for the advice. now if I can just get one to go broody...

    Silkie question

So, finally ready to dump silkie roos down to 2, though I may go down to 1 based on your advice. I have all the colors except a splash, for hens. I have a beautiful white and great partridge roos. The other roos are getting a new home tomorrow, so kinda short notice. What will the outcomes %...

What to cover run with for predator protection

Chicken wire has never failed me. Id actually really like to know if its the hardware cloth manufactures that sell chicken wire down the river. Mine is on with 1.5 inch staples . I challenge any grown man to pull it off much less a predator. Do what you like though, its your money in the end.

    Chicken Tractor questions

I'd second Aarts recommendation on the trailer frame. If you look at the classifieds regularly, you can usually find an old enclosed trailer for cheap that has rotted floor boards or just in general is beat up, but usable for your purposes. Catawba coops would be my other rec. I built one...

    Weed suppressant fabric?

I don't see anywhere that you are not going to free range in addition to the run. Are you planning to leave them full time in the run? If so, the remove the block and fill with stuff is going to be necessary. If not, then pull it and don't waste your money or time on refilling. The...

    Ideal run fence

We have ours broke down to normal large fowl in a 30x25 covered with a horsestall coop and a free standing 6x8 coop. the silkies have a seperate stall and a covered 12 x 25 run. the large fowl all free range, im working on getting a large section of the pasture separated with farm fence 4x4...

    Ideal run fence

forgot to mention, putting fencing underground is akin to just cutting it off. It will rot/rust faster than it will protect anything. Go to the local tire shop, ask for used bald tires, if they want you to pay, go somewhere else. They pay to dispose of them so you taking them is a godsend...

    Ideal run fence

Here we don't get minks, but we have coons, possums, yotes, and dogs. I use 16' cow panels that have the smaller holes at the bottom and move up to 4 or 6" squares up top. I use them as the lower panel all the way around the runs. Prior to staking that onto the posts, I stretch chicken wire...

Any advice for dealing with bald eagles?

Following the three S's has never failed. google it. Not saying I condone it or practice it, just saying its a saying for a reason, take it as you will. DNR and Conservation biologists were no help here. I do not have eagle or hawk problems anymore, but I did put 2x4 welded wire roofing on...

Crossbow hunter here. compound bow for the past 17-18 years but switched to crossbow 3 years ago due to back surgeries and a shoulder that really wants to get cut... For Canada or any one else wanting to get a step up from their target bow, I highly recommend ArcheryTalk dot com. They have...
