    New Batch

The site where I've got them from described the eggs as: You will get a mix of eggs that may be a purebred or cross of from Barnevelder, Blue or Black Australorp, , Cochin, Maran, Silver Spangled Hamburg or Langshan

    New Batch

Hi all... I just completed a hatch from eggs sent via mail that were sold as "barnyard mix". I was curious if anyone can identify the breed of these little ones, and while I know it's probably impossible, if anyone can tell the gender. Side Note - they're about 4 days old if it helps. Thanks

    Damp flooring during lockdown

I have a low-key, homemade styrofoam 'bator that I've used successfully in the past. I use the rubbery shelf lining material for the flooring. The eggs are currently in lockdown (Day 19). I had a tough time getting the humidity up, and once I finally reached the target humidity, I noticed that...

    Egg quality during winter

I'm in the U.S. northeast (temperature has been about 30s and 40s). Yesterday, I went to a local farm to pick up some fertile eggs, and candled them when I got home. Everything looked fine, but since they were cold to the touch, I waited a day and kept the eggs in room temperature before setting...

Something attached to newly hatched chick's leg??

Yup, sure enough it did. Chick is doing great...suprisingly very active for a newly hatched chick compared to the others.

Something attached to newly hatched chick's leg??

Hi, wondering if anyone can shed some light... Newly hatched chick has something attached to it's leg which it's dragging around...it was originally stuck to the shell. I'm afraid to pull it off in case it causes bleeding. Any thoughts on what this is, and what, if anything I should do?

    Solo chicks???

So I just hatched a few chicks for the first time. Knowing that I wouldn't have the time to care for the chicks after hatch, I made sure they would have homes before I even incubated. A few friends had interest and now there's even a wait list... Not as many hatched as I would like, so I was...

length between hatches if all were simultaneously set?

Kind of a 2 part question: Day 21 here...or 22 if you count the day you set the eggs as Day 0... Out of 6 viable eggs, 2 were hatched this morning. The other 3 show no signs of pipping. I know some people say wait until Day 25 or even more for eggs to hatch..but if they were all set the same...

How critical is temperature accuracy during lockdown?

Do you have the brand/model of that? I don't see it on the pic you posted.

How critical is temperature accuracy during lockdown?

Sounds like a good idea. I was going to get a model which you can calibrate anyway, so I'll def. look into that one!

How critical is temperature accuracy during lockdown?

Thanks for the reply and the tip on humidity. I keep seeing that people's goal is 75% in case they need to open the bater for one reason or another, so it's been holding steady at around 71/72%. Worst case, if I have to open the bater to fill the water bowl, will it be safe if the humidity dips...

How critical is temperature accuracy during lockdown?

negative...it's one of those basic AcuRite ones..I attached a screen shot from a hardware store's page. I looked into the specific model, and unfortunately, I can't calibrate it.

How critical is temperature accuracy during lockdown?

That's the thing...I have one of those combined hygrometer/thermometers which can't be calibrated. I know it's not as accurate as it should be, but being that this is my first attempt (and using a homemade styrofoam incubator) I figured I'd use it. Since it's a still-air, I've been trying to...
