Whew Thanks !..lol.. I figured I was going to get tarred n feathered for this one ... But yes, Capons really are all about the meat and the quality of the meat, which ya just won't get in any other chicken. Oh man, it's been about 25 years since the Capon caper as the boys still refer to...
I've bought from a few of the hatcheries over the years McMurrays, Meyers, Hoovers, and years ago I pretty much had good luck with all of them. I believe the biggest share of the time when DOA chicks are involved it's due to mishandling during shipping. I have found a hatchery that I've been...
Ya don't understand. It didn't matter to us if we had roosters or hens really. Back then we had a pretty good sized flock and kept our freezer full. I'm old and live here by myself now and just keep a small flock of 10-12 hens with one rooster. Back when we did this project, we did it for my...
So, I get where everyone is coming from, but there's another side of the coin..surprise ! ... In the town nearest to me there's a "Market House" where a couple times a week the areas farmers can take their produce/livestock to sell. Years ago there was always this one guy that had fresh unfrozen...
Several years ago my son decided he waned to make some capons for his 4H project. He got the approval from his leader as long as I was there and helped him..oh boy.. So we had just gotten 25 barred rock chicks and as soon as we could tell we took out the 4 nicest cockerels. Back then Mcmurray's...
I've read a lot of good things about DE. I've even been using it for some time in their nest boxes and sprinkeled on the floor mixed in with the pine shavings and even mixed a little in their food now and again thinking I was doin a good thing in helping rid them of any unwanted internal...
I have never tried Leghorns I don; think, but when ever I get a patient that is a little jittery or doesn't want to lay still I find a way to get something over his eyes so he can't see. That has always calmed them right down for me. But then you have to get down to business as I doubt them high...
Ok.. after reading all the posts in this thread I've determined my lil hen has sour crop. Her breath is terrible like rotten eggs, Crop looks lop sided but no hard lumps.Actually all I can really feel is her wishbone. She hasn't been eating much at all. She does drink a little water. I picked her...
Ok.. finally found this thread in the archives . I'm slightly unsure if I've been dosing properly. I have the powder oxytetracycline and after some thinking I figured to get a 600 to 800mg solution I am mixing 1/4 teaspoon (or about 1 gram) per gallon of water. I hope that's enough as some are...
So glad to hear how well the class went. The step by step photos of the procedure are great ! They should give folks that want to learn how to caponize but weren't able to make the class, the confidence to learn how to do it by following the illustrations . Great job teachers !
When I build the new coop it will not be far from my bedroom window. Now I like the sound of nice roo crowin in the morning but we all know they crow a lot more than that. I'm wondering, is there really much call to have one in your flock if your not planning on breeding ?
Uh ohhhh... I see surgeon's registration right around the corner ! .... j/k y'all .. I know once ya see how easy it is you'll wonder why ya were so apprehensive. Can't wait to hear some of the stories.
