Hi
Had my first run of what seemed to be Coccidiossis recently. Kept hens for about 15 years but never had this come up, maybe we have been lucky. Any way had some older and younger birds affected.
Read two books and did some research on the net. I tried Crushed Garlic in the water but that...
Hi
I think I may already know but having never had this in 15 years wanted to get some feedback.
Have one adult and three younger hens about 7 weeks old become ill: Lathargic, fluffed up off food and standing still alot. May have found some diarea.
Breathing seems fine, adult wormed...
Hi
we have had one Silkie bantam hatch on day 20. All fine and normal but second egg that candles fertile has not popped.
nearing end of day 21 does that mean there is a issue?
I have candles as not pipped yet. The first pip has not taken place and there is still aair gap for the chicken to...
I’ve managed to order some blue silkie cuckoo hatching eggs. Would like to get a different male next year for any girls we hatch so we hatch some genetically diverse chicks of our own next year. Have a whole run set aside for them.
I keep seeing blue and then blue cuckoo, is there a difference...
That is a good idea! So the Roos in question are now rehomed for sale and if they don’t sell go to sanctuary. Two of them are frizzles and they may keep one or both for breeding mixed Pekin frizzles.
Have some little ones coming on so may have a few more to him in four more weeks but that’s it...
So my local place can take 3. Charge a fortune mind you but three are off to sanctuary to live in some woods. Other two will be bird bay or I’ll dispatch myself. Some will love on happy which is great
Thanks, I know we live their eggs just eat two for one big egg. More yoke 😉
they have amazing temperaments the Pekin’s. Great pets as well, we have two over 11 year old girls in retirement with us.
Yes and; I am realising when I “buy” a pullet I have probably paid for a cockerel and a hen. I may not be dispatching but I believe as you say it has happened on that farm.
This has torn me when it comes to hatching some eggs (we don’t hatch loads only for our backyard hens).
I feel now I’m...
I would like to but no one wants them. I have Bantams, we could eat them but neighbours will have an issue while we mature that many Roos. I do keep one or two and last year I rehomed but sadly no availability with anyone. Tried a couple of farms as well.
In UK and have advertised on Preloved for free to good home. No luck though. There is a breeder near by and they let you pay them they quarantine them for a period then they go to a sanctuary. Happy to pay but since Covid he has had lots of Roos. Lots of us have hatched chicks in lockdown I...
I think dispatch, eating feels more respectful but lots of neighbours and two of them have strayed crowing already. I can have one roo crowing but lots would be to much I think.
Dispatch I think
Hi
mouth second batch of chicks are doing well.
If I post images would people help to see if these younger birds are boys or girls?
Have some older chicks and they are easy, think I’ve got better at it as we haven’t hatched many birds before would be good to get second opinion.
A high percentage of cockerels hatched. Last year I rehomed but this year I can’t find a home for them all.
They are over 8 weeks old now. Think I may have to cull witch is sad.
What is the most humane way to do it?
Any advice would be appreciated. Quite like the little fellas but we can’t keep...
