One of my 5 ladies was acting this way and yesterday she passed. Her last 4 hours or so were spent having very labored breathing. I noticed when trying to separate her from her sisters that all of the feathers were off the back of her neck which I thought was odd at the time, but did not connect...
My girl passed about 30 minutes ago. I was separating her from her sisters while on hold trying to track down meds. I am beside myself. For us, and I know for many others, these are beloved pets. I can't believe how quickly this all happened.
This also describes my girl well - I will separate her from my other 4 chickens now and honestly, I hope she is alive when I get back from feed store, which is about 45 minutes away. She looks that bad, very labored breathing.
I came on to post the same - my poor girl's comb is almost white, very labored breathing, could not get on roost last night, nor off today. She looks like she is at deaths door.
We have sand in our run and it is great. We just rake it out twice a week and it is odor free. We were flooded a bit ago - what a nightmare - but this was due to the slope of the run and poor drainage, the water had no where to go. Sand will not solve this problem and I am headed out to pour...
I love it! So glad you posted, I had read your description on another post, the "shanty town" that turned into Martha Stewarts yard! We are somewhere in between, with every structural improvement / new piece of roof or foundation / trench work I try and make ours a *bit* nicer just b/c our...
We have a sand run and are very happy with it. It is easily raked out and maintained with no odor. My best advice though would be make sure the run allows for proper drainage. We have finally figured out in our new run how to divert the great flood when it rains, but each slope will be a bit...
I just have to add my amazement - I live in a fairly "green" city and have never seen anything like this. I am going to be sharing this thread and your link with many people over the next few days and I am very excited to see how your chicken coop and run progress. It is not that difficult to...
We have an open bottom coop design, our coop is about 40" off the ground, double doors in front, just 30" deep and another 40" ht. The bottom is covered w/ hardware wire, 1x1, and we have just 5 ladies. Most of the droppings go straight down to the ground, which in about 2 hrs will be sand again...
Hi Denise in Sonoma - I'm in Berkeley so I guess we're having the same weather! I have tarps I could even nail into the sides, it has been so windy though I'd need to really do all to make a difference and was concerned about air flow with the swamp that has been created. I was trying to avoid...
We have had a deluge of rain, flooded run, and the ladies (5 of them) now have a roof over most of the run and pallets in the run so they are no longer standing in the mud and muck and water. It is still raining, very wet and damp (by no means dry inside as the walls are chicken wire) and the...
Well, Yesterday we put pallets in our run and I put a roof on most of the run, b/c we are having just torrential rain and the run is truly flooded. I had not seen a rat in a few days, though I had seen some of the "evidence" they'd eaten some poison on the side of the house where one of the bait...
My run is flooded. Just put in pallets and planks - my ladies are kind of wary / freaked out. In a triliion years though I never would have thought of this - another fabulous BYC idea. We are supposed to get another 4" rain in the next 24 hrs. Only half our run is covered, off to HD to get more...
I am CRACKING UP at KristenM expecting to find the exploded rats after the mashed potatoes - I did the same thing! Also just waiting for our yard to be littered with dead rats from the bait boxes too but that has not happened yet either. I have seen evidence though that the rats are finally...
