Hi,
My chicken was acting strange this morning. I suspected sour crop or eggbound, so gave her an epsom bath and calcium and separated her. After a few hours, she passed stool that had a tiny bit of blood and a piece of glass! My guess is that it knicked her on the insides. I am hoping the...
Hi everyone!
My flock has mareks disease (confirmed with a PCR test). I’m hoping to add vaccinated chicks to my flock. Can anyone share setups for the chick brooder room that have worked for them and how long they were in the setup? Also, any details of mortality / symptoms after introducing...
Thank you. She’s not doing much better but still alive. Hopefully her owner can take her to the vet this Monday or Tuesday and get her actually diagnosed. :fl
What I thought could be tapeworm segments are all light/translucent rather than white, so hopefully they aren’t tapeworms. They are jelly...
Hi,
I’m fostering a 15 month old welsummer hen, who’s been feeling under the weather for about 8 days. Shes been under her mom’s TLC for the last week but was not eating yesterday, so I took over.
She is lethargic and not moving much. One eye closed, her head is kind of tilted (mareks is a...
Thank you! That is interesting to learn about re: cecal poop. She did lay another egg this afternoon, with a bit of blood on it but not as much as the one that caused the prolapse. She doesn't seem to have a prolapse vent now. I'll continue to supplement with the calcium pills for the next few...
Hi Azygous,
Thanks! I have been giving her calcium gel (+ vitamin d), about 600 mg a day. The brand I have is calcium carbonate, it seems like. I'll look into calcium citrate.
Thanks for writing about your experience in such detail. What implication does cecal poop have? She has had a few...
Keep dripping in egg yolk. If you can get to a pet store, you can make wet feed out of baby parrot feed, which is similar to chick feed but powdered - makes a really smooth paste - so much easier to Pipette or syringe feed. Best of luck to puff ❤️
Hi everyone,
Wanted to share our hen’s prolapse journey and get some thoughts on how to proceed to prevent future incidents. Specifically, when to move her back outside to the coop.
This is Bowie, our brabanter x polish mix hen who is a delight (and the loudest in the bunch!). She is 1 year...
Thank you. I called them and they mentioned it would be $100 for the necropsy, which is a lot more reasonable... their form states that you need a vet referral, but the person on the phone said that’s not needed for backyard flocks.
She is still hanging on, but still just being tube fed. She is...
Thank you @Eggcessive . I am mailing in the blood samples today (one from her, another from an asymptomatic chicken in the main coop). I'll post when I get the results. The lab said they usually have results next-day.
She seems a bit more alert when I hold her head upright with my hands - but...
Please help, I’m on the verge of giving up. My 13 week old girl has a severe case of wry neck.
Background: I got her as a chick from a local chicken owner; she didn’t vaccinate against Mareks. Wry neck started off mild about 3 weeks ago so I was giving her bits of food on the side and vitamin E...
What do their poops actually look like? I think pictures would be helpful. Also, you can try to gently poke a gloved finger (use lubricant or oil) inside their cloaca to see if you can feel an egg to determine whether they are egg bound.
I am not an expert on how viruses spread between flocks...
Hi,
I have a 9.5 month old Austra white hen with white spots all over her comb. Can anyone tell if this might be fowl pox?
Health history:
She has been ill recently with what I think was salmonella overload (now much better). She also has some scabs / bumble foot on both of her feet, but not...
