My neighbors leave piles corn in the woods for those rats. They like to use my driveway as a shortcut to the field across the road. Another good reason to only leave out a little at a time.
In the wild, chicken eat a lot of bugs. I don't see anything wrong with continuing with the BSFL.
At least you'll know where they are coming from, if you are growing them at home. If you are buying dead BSFL then read the package carefully.
Yes I have. I still put food out for them in the form of corn, wheat, and oats. As mentioned above, it doesn't work as well in the winter. They still foraged but I kept food out for them, adding sunflower seeds.
Chickens don't normally lay this time of year. If they would have normally started laying, they aren't going to now if you are in the northern hemisphere. They will start up in mid February.
At his age he might not be able to put on muscle.
When I buy hamburger I make little burgers for the chickens. Size of a dime or penny or even a quarter. I thaw the mini burgers and break them apart. The chickens love them. I don't give a lot, more like a treat. You could just drop a couple...
The concrete floor will be close to the temperature of the ground it lies on. I have in-floor radiant heat. I'm very happy that we decided to heat the garage floor. I do not keep the garage the same temp as the house, but let it be cooler. Cooler is going to be better for your chicks than...
You need your roosting bar to be above the door. I'm not sure you can do that.
You only need one bar. As a general rule you want 12" of roost for each chicken. But, it also depends on how big the chickens are.
I like have the coop within the fencing so you are going crazy with predator...
Our first pond was hand dug. Not my my hands. In the winter DH would heat up water in a dutch oven and set it on the ice. A Hole would magically appear in the ice. This was for the fish, not for ducks.
My current pond is larger and deeper. Ducks in the pond help to keep ice from forming...
I am a dog person. I am a foster home for dogs. I wrote a book on taking in a second hand dog. I train dogs.
I agree with the electric fencing. It never sleeps (except after severe storms, but you can use solar). The bigger dogs need more exercise than 400 sq ft. Actually, most dogs need...
All I can think of is wind. On a lawn, everything would stay near or on the ground if the coop got blown over. They would get scared and seek shelter. If your coop set up was blown over it would be ugly real fast.
