    Free range in winter?

Hi. First time having chickens in several years and this time we have an Eglu Go Up coop with run. Do you free range in winter? Before we had a bigger homemade coop and run. This one seems so small in comparison— unsure what to do re: winter. Advise? Personal experiences? Thanks!

    chickens going to roost

they all went in to roost tonight. Maybe I was expecting them to go in too early? It was dark when we got home tonight and all 6 were in and roosting.

    chickens going to roost

Oh, if it helps, they are 12 weeks old now. I work 7pm to 7 am 3 nights a week. The chickens are "my thing" and my husband does not want to have to put them away each night. I was wondering if I need to put them away before I go to work or if they will put themselves in for the night.

    chickens going to roost

I am raising my first flock of chickens. I have 6 Buff Orpingtons (all females). I usually put them in the coop from their enclosed run in the evening. Do they learn to go in to roost themselves, or if I don't put them inside, will they just sleep outside in the run? Thanks.

    enclosed chicken run

Anyone know if it is necessary to enclose the top of a chicken yard? I have seen most chicken coops/yards around here (mid central PA) do not have the top enclosed, just a fence around it. But, most I see on line have the top enclosed as well. Any thoughts? Advice? Thanks.

    inside new coop

I painted the inside. Used an exterior latex paint + primer. It turned out very nice. Now if we stop having thunderstorms when I am off work, I can get the outside painted! Going to use barn red and make the trim white.

    inside new coop

We are about finished with our first coop. Is there any reason NOT to paint the interior? Will it harm the chickens? I thought it would make it easier to clean and more durable.

    New to Chicks and chickens!

Had the chicks outside in the sun in the yard for the first time this afternoon. They are 3 weeks old today. It took them awhile to get off of me and onto the grass, but they seemed to really enjoy it then! Nope, didn't have my phone with me for pics.

    enclosed chicken run

Hi. We are building a coop and enclosed yard (run) for 6 hens. Is an enclosed 6 ft x 12 ft. yard attached to the coop plus space available under the coop (which is 8 ft x 4 ft) adequate for the hens to have? I plan to also let them roam the back yard but only when I am out there to supervise...

    building first coop

How far apart should the slats on a chicken ramp be placed? and how wide should they be?

    New to Chicks and chickens!

Thanks for the suggestions, but Barry seems to be getting more into the idea of building a coop. He has a diagram drawn and parts list that he is working on. We picked a site out back as well.

    New to Chicks and chickens!

Hi. I've never raised chicks or chickens, but want to start. I've kind of decided on 6 pullets and love the looks and description of Buff Orpingtons. My husband was going to build a coop and run...now he wants me to look at a portable coop first to "see how it goes" before he tries to build...
